Fake Ledger Wallet Exposed With Hidden Chip Stealing Seed Phrases and PIN

A cybersecurity researcher from Brazil exposed a large-scale scam operation after buying a “Ledger” hardware wallet from a Chinese marketplace listing that looked legitimate and was priced the same as the official store. The packaging appeared original from a distance, but the device was counterfeit.

When the researcher connected it to Ledger Live installed from ledger.com, it failed the Genuine Check, confirming it was not a real Ledger device. This failure led the researcher to open the device and examine its internal hardware and firmware.

Cloned Websites and Malicious Apps

Inside the shell, the researcher found a completely different chip, not the type used in a hardware wallet. The chip markings had been physically scraped off to hide identification. As per the researcher’s Reddit post, the device also contained a WiFi and Bluetooth antenna, which is not present in a real Ledger Nano S+. By analyzing the chip layout, they identified it as an ESP32-S3 with internal flash memory.

When the device booted, it initially masked itself as a Ledger Nano S+ 7704 with serial numbers and Ledger factory identity, but later revealed its true manufacturer as Espressif Systems.

After dumping the firmware and reverse engineering it, the researcher found that the PIN created on the device was stored in plaintext. The seed phrases from wallets generated on the device were also stored in plaintext. The firmware also contained multiple hardcoded domain references pointing to external command-and-control servers. These findings revealed that the device was designed to collect sensitive wallet data, with links to external servers.

The researcher also examined how the attack might work in practice. Although the hardware contained a WiFi and Bluetooth antenna, the firmware did not show evidence of

Crypto Kidnapping Surge: French Probe After €3M Ransom Case


French authorities are investigating a rise in crypto-linked kidnappings after a 74-year-old man from Voiron in Isère survived a violent 16-hour abduction in January 2026. Police said attackers stormed his home and forced him to contact his son while demanding cryptocurrency, believing the family held significant digital assets.

The incident forms part of a growing pattern of organized groups targeting individuals linked to crypto through data leaks and online tracking.

As per a local report, the victim, identified as Jean, told investigators that his kidnappers assaulted him repeatedly while trying to extract access codes from his son. Authorities confirmed the group demanded €3 million before police intervention ended the case.

Rising Violence in Crypto-Linked Kidnappings

Jean told investigators that the attackers used repeated violence over several hours, including threats, forced movement, and physical assault. He said they filmed him to pressure his son into paying a ransom.

However, no payment was made after the son confirmed he did not control large crypto funds. Police later arrested three suspects aged between 19 and 23 during the operation.

Investigators said the group acted under instructions from a remote coordinator believed to be based abroad. They added that the attackers were recruited through social media and operated as low-level executors.

Moreover, authorities linked the same operational pattern to at least twenty kidnappings between 2023 and 2025, with activity increasing sharply in 2026.

According to crypto analyst Sykodelic, the probability of Bitcoin printing new lows has dropped significantly based on long-term indicators — particularly weekly momentum data.
A rare RSI signal is flashing
One of the key arguments comes from the weekly Relative Strength Index (RSI). Historically, Bitcoin has only seen the weekly RSI drop below 30 on three occasions — with the most recent occurring in Q1 2026.
What stands out this time is not just the oversold reading, but the recovery pattern. The RSI has rebounded strongly and broken above a long-term descending trendline, a structure that often signals a shift from bearish momentum to early bullish recovery phases.
Multiple bottom signals are aligning
Sykodelic also highlights that this isn’t an isolated indicator. According to his analysis, around 12 different long-term bottom signals have now aligned — a level of convergence rarely seen in previous cycles.
Supporting this view, on-chain and market data show strengthening fundamentals:
Bitcoin exchange reserves have fallen to a 7-year low, suggesting reduced selling pressure
Whale wallets have accumulated over $2 billion worth of Bitcoin in recent weeks
Spot Bitcoin ETFs have recorded strong inflows, including nearly $1 billion in April alone following positive momentum in March
These flows suggest that larger players may already be positioning for the next phase of the cycle.
