On April 18, 2026, Kelp DAO's liquidity restaking protocol was compromised by an attacker who siphoned 116,500 rsETH (equivalent to approximately $293 million at the time) from the cross-chain bridge within hours. The entire process was unusually efficient, from forging cross-chain messages to distributing the stolen funds across three lending protocols—Aave V3, Compound V3, and Euler—to lend out real assets. The attackers withdrew with $236 million worth of WETH that same day. Aave, SparkLend, and Fluid subsequently froze the rsETH market.

This was the largest DeFi attack of 2026 to date.

However, one thing distinguished this attack from most hacks: Kelp DAO's smart contract code contained no vulnerabilities.  Security researcher @0xQuit, who participated in the investigation, wrote on X, "From what I currently understand, this is a combination of two problems: a 1-of-1 DVN configuration, and the DVN node itself being compromised." LayerZero's official statement also didn't mention the contract code, characterizing the problem as an "rsETH vulnerability" rather than a "LayerZero vulnerability."


$293 million isn't in any line of code. It's hidden in a misplaced configuration parameter during deployment.


The general logic of DeFi security auditing is: find the contract, read the code, find vulnerabilities. This logic works quite smoothly when dealing with code logic vulnerabilities; tools like Slither and Mythril have mature capabilities for detecting known patterns such as reentrancy attacks and integer overflows. LLM-assisted code auditing, which has been heavily promoted in the past two years, also has some capability against business logic vulnerabilities (such as flash loan arbitrage paths).

A Deal Years In The Making
Alcoa’s Massena East smelter went dark in 2014 after energy costs climbed and overseas competition cut into margins. The sprawling facility along the St. Lawrence River has sat idle ever since.

Based on reports, Alcoa CEO Bill Oplinger told Bloomberg the two companies are deep in talks and expects a deal to close sometime in the middle of 2026. Financial terms were not disclosed.

For NYDIG, the appeal goes beyond location. Industrial smelters are wired for round-the-clock heavy operations — they come with substations, transmission lines, and grid connections that can handle enormous power loads.

Data center operators and crypto miners often wait years to build that kind of infrastructure from scratch. At Massena, it already exists. The site also draws power from the New York Power Authority’s hydroelectric supply, which cuts costs and reduces the carbon footprint of whatever runs there next.

Old Industry, New Tenants
Massena is not the only shuttered smelter drawing interest from the digital sector. Earlier this year, Century Aluminum sold its Hawesville, Kentucky facility to TeraWulf for $200 million.

TeraWulf plans to turn the site into a high-performance computing and AI campus. Since that deal closed, TeraWulf shares have climbed 80% year-to-date, according to Yahoo Finance data.
