Crypto Kidnapping Surge: French Probe After €3M French authorities are investigating a rise in crypto-linked kidnappings after a 74-year-old man from Voiron in Isère survived a violent 16-hour abduction in January 2026. Police said attackers stormed his home and forced him to contact his son while demanding cryptocurrency, believing the family held significant digital assets.
The incident forms part of a growing pattern of organized groups targeting individuals linked to crypto through data leaks and online tracking.

As per a local report, the victim, identified as Jean, told investigators that his kidnappers assaulted him repeatedly while trying to extract access codes from his son. Authorities confirmed the group demanded €3 million before police intervention ended the case

Wrapped $XRP went live on Solana on Friday, issued by custodian Hex Trust and bridged through LayerZero, making the token available inside Solana's DeFi apps for the first time.

$XRP holders can now use the wrapped asset on Jupiter, Phantom, Titan Exchange, and Meteora without selling their underlying position.

Each wXRP is backed 1:1 by native $XRP held in segregated custody accounts and is redeemable at any time, according to Hex Trust.

The Solana launch is one leg of a broader rollout Hex Trust disclosed in December 2025, which also targets Ethereum, Optimism, and HyperEVM. The move fits a pattern that has accelerated through 2025 and 2026, where tokens that started their life on one chain are being bridged to others to capture yield and liquidity that did not exist at launch.

$XRP has historically functioned as a payment-rail token settled directly on the $XRP Ledger. Solana has built the opposite use case, a throughput-optimized smart contract platform where the DeFi and memecoin activity actually lives.

Ripple prepares to release almost $1.5 billion of XRP in less than 2 weeks

Ripple is set to unlock 1 billion XRP from its escrow contracts on May 1, continuing a monthly release program established in 2017.

At the time, the company placed 55 billion XRP into cryptographically secured escrow on the XRP Ledger to improve transparency and predictability around supply. 

Under this mechanism, 1 billion XRP becomes available at the start of each month. The structured approach was designed to address concerns about Ripple’s large holdings and to avoid sudden market shocks.

Now, the May release is another routine step in a schedule expected to run through at least 2027, as the escrowed balance gradually declines. 

With XRP currently trading at $1.47, the upcoming unlock carries a notional value of about $1.47 billion, though the actual figure will vary with price movements.

While closely watched for potential supply impact, historical patterns show that most of the unlocked XRP does not enter circulation immediately. 

In this line, Ripple typically re-locks 60% to 80% of the tokens into new escrow contracts. In recent months, including March and April 2026, about 700 million XRP were re-escrowed, leaving roughly 200 to 300 million XRP for operational use such as partnerships, liquidity provision, and ecosystem development.

This re-locking trend has helped limit net additions to circulating supply, meaning monthly unlocks have generally had minimal immediate market impact.

Stripe doubles down on blockchain and stablecoins, aiming to become 'AWS for money'


Global payments giant Stripe is building what it calls the "AWS for money," and crypto tech is at the center of that plan.

Speaking at the RWA Summit in Cannes, France, Adrien Duchâteau, Stripe's head of crypto go-to-market, said the company is now integrating stablecoins and blockchain across its core payment stack as it looks to modernize how money moves globally.

"We’re putting product by product more of our stack onchain," he said.

The move builds on the firm's long, if uneven, history with crypto. Stripe was one of the earliest major tech companies to embrace bitcoin , enabling BTC payments as early as 2014 before pulling back in 2018 as volatility made it impractical for merchants, Duchâteau said. The company returned in 2021 with a dedicated crypto team, betting that the underlying technology had matured enough to support real-world use, he added.

Speeding up payments with stablecoins

The company's blockchain ambition focuses on fixing a core problem: global payments remain slow and expensive. Cross-border transfers, Duchâteau explained, still rely on systems like SWIFT, which can take days to settle. For platforms paying creators or contractors, that delay often dictates payout schedules.

Stripe processes nearly $2 trillion in annual payments — roughly 2% of the global GDP — and serves over 5 million businesses around the globe, so even incremental improvements to settlement could have wide-reaching effects, he said.

"We’re operating in T+3 networks," he said, meaning that a transaction often takes three days from the moment of payment to settlement. "If you reduce that to zero, that is a magnitude of change."
