Bitcoin's Sharpe Ratio slides to lowest since 2022. Here's what it means.

Bitcoin $BTC$62,867.66 has dropped by 28% so far this year, a brutal slide that looks even worse through the lens of the Sharpe Ratio, a metric professional investors use to determine what slice of their portfolio should be allocated to a specific asset.

The Sharpe Ratio is the gold standard for measuring risk-adjusted returns and was developed by Nobel Prize-winning economist William F. Sharpe.

Bitcoin's 365-day rolling Sharpe Ratio plummeted to -21 at the end of June, the lowest since late 2022, according to data source CryptoQuant. It was recently hovering just short of -20.

This deeply negative reading indicates that a bitcoin investor over the period took on extra market volatility while generating a return far worse than they could have earned on a risk-free investment, such as the 10-year U.S. Treasury note. The benchmark bond recently offered a yield of around 4.45%.

The Sharpe Ratio is calculated by subtracting the risk-free rate from the asset's total return over a specific period, then dividing the result by the asset's standard deviation (a measure of price volatility). A positive ratio means investors are being rewarded for taking the volatility risk. A negative ratio suggests they are being punished.

Professional investors don't just look at a coin's price relative to its long-term average to assess whether it's cheap. They use metrics such as the Sharpe Ratio to determine position sizing.

Imagine two coins: A and B. Coin A has fallen 30% from its recent high, but in a fairly steady way. Coin B has also fallen 30%, but its price is all over the place, jumping up and down by big percentages every day. Looking only at the drop from the high, both coins look equally

Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, appears to have breached the MPs’ disclosure rules. In other words, Farage did not disclose substantial financial support from George Cottrell.

For context, Cottrell was a convicted fraudster who operated an offshore cryptocurrency gambling platform. According to The Sunday Times, ahead of Farage’s July 2024 election as MP for Clacton, Cottrell allegedly covered expenses for his private security, drivers, and lodging. Analysis Company and Chinese Analyst Explain What’s Needed for a Bitcoin Bull Run!

Bitcoin, the leading cryptocurrency, is currently trading around $62,700, having recovered from its lows last week after falling below $58,000, as ETF inflows began to improve market sentiment.

While the direction of future price movement is a subject of speculation, analysis firm CryptoQuant has released a new analysis on what is needed for an upward trend.

Bitcoin Needs $1 Trillion to Rise!

According to CryptoQuant analysts, $BTC needs more than $1 trillion in new capital for its next surge.

According to CryptoQuant’s analysis, Bitcoin’s capital efficiency has decreased, and it needs over $1 trillion in new funding to support its next surge.

Analysts noted that $BTC’s capital efficiency has dropped sharply in past bull cycles, requiring significantly more capital for rallies.

Citing historical data, analysts have shown that net inflows of $2.8 billion in 2011 led to a 55,000% price increase, while inflows of $69 billion in 2015 resulted in a 10,000% increase. In the current cycle, which began in 2022, inflows of $697 billion yielded a 689% gain.

At this point, CryptoQuant CEO Ki Young Ju states that for Bitcoin to gain further, there needs to be large-scale institutional transactions beyond the current retail investor-focused ETF transactions.

However, the CEO stated that institutional funds were not yet ready for such a large-scale influx, citing net outflows from spot $BTC ETFs for months and Bitcoin’s downward trend at the end of the first half of the year as reasons.

Aside from CryptoQuant, Chinese crypto analyst Murphy also shared his latest analysis on $BTC. According to his post, the analyst stated that Bitcoin’s recovery is difficult to consider a trend reversal due to the decline in spot trading volume.
