Opera's MiniPay launches Visa debit card for stablecoin spending
MiniPay has launched a Visa debit card that allows users in selected markets across Africa, Latin America, Southeast Asia and Europe to make purchases using stablecoins.

According to Tuesday's announcement, the card is powered by Gnosis Pay's infrastructure, enabling users to pay directly from their MiniPay wallets while merchants receive local currency through Visa's network.

MiniPay said it has grown to more than 16 million activated wallets across 65 countries since launching in 2023, with much of its adoption concentrated in Africa and other emerging markets.

The card can be added to Apple Pay and Google Pay, while eligible users in some markets will receive cashback rewards denominated in stablecoins USDt and $USDC, as well as Tether Gold.

MiniPay is a stablecoin wallet owned by Opera, the Nasdaq-listed software company best known for its web browser. Built on the Celo blockchain, the wallet focuses on payments, transfers and savings using dollar-backed stablecoins.

Stablecoins see adoption in emerging markets

The launch comes as stablecoins gain traction in emerging markets. In Latin America, a recent Bitso report found that dollar-backed stablecoins overtook Bitcoin as the most-purchased crypto asset among the exchange's users in 2025, with $USDC and USDT accounting for a combined 40% of purchases.

Adoption is also accelerating among businesses in the region. Bitso reported that stablecoin transaction volumes among its institutional clients rose 81% year-on-year in the first half of 2026, while banks and licensed payment providers accounted for more than 60% of new business customers added during the period.

The findings were based on the Gate Netflow Heatmap, which tracks inflows and outflows across multiple crypto assets.

The data showed a group of tokens recording stronger outflows than inflows, a pattern often associated with accumulation activity.

Capital that spent years flowing into crypto is chasing Al stocks instead. And the question being asked across every corner of the market right now is the same one it always is at moments like this: is it ever going to end?

Where Did All the Money Go

For anyone confused about why Bitcoin has been bleeding while the stock market printed record highs, Michael Saylor laid it out in a recent interview. The Al industry is currently trying to raise approximately $500 billion to power data centres, and that capital has to come from somewhere. A portion of it, he said, is coming directly from Bitcoin.

"They're creating a suction and they're sucking capital out of every other asset class," Saylor said. "One or two percent of that capital is coming from Bitcoin."

His view is that this rotation is temporary by nature. Once the Al deals close and lockup periods expire, the traders and hedge funds who got in early will rotate profits back into other assets including Bitcoin. He estimates a 12 to 24 week cycle before that reversal becomes visible, pointing to the end of 2026 as the window where things start to shift.

Bitcoin drops toward $62,000 as the chip selloff deepens for a second dayBitcoin fell toward $62,000 on Wednesday as a second day of heavy selling in technology stocks kept pressure on risk assets worldwide.

The token traded around $62,546, down 2.1% over 24 hours and 4.9% on the week, per CoinDesk data, sliding back toward the lower end of the range it has held all month.

The selling was steep across the board. Ether dropped 3.7% to $1,661 for a 7.2% weekly loss, XRP fell 2.2% to $1.10 and is down 9.3% on the week, solana lost 3.3% to $69 and dogecoin slid 9.8% over seven days. Hyperliquid's HYPE was the worst hit, down 8.8% on the day and 18.6% on the week to about $61. Tron held up best, up 3.7% on the week.

The pressure came from the same place as Tuesday. A renewed rout in semiconductor shares, the stocks that have led this year's market with triple-digit gains, sent the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index down 7.9% on Tuesday, with all 30 members falling.

Micron, Marvell and On Semiconductor, each more than doubled in 2026, led the drop. The selloff pulled the S&P 500 down 1.4% and the Nasdaq 100 down 3.3%. An attempted rebound in Asian chip stocks failed to hold on Wednesday, with Taiwan Semiconductor down more than 3%.

Oil kept falling as the other half of the macro picture. Brent crude slipped about 1% toward $76 a barrel as tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz became more visible following the US-Iran interim peace deal. A gauge of the dollar climbed to a seven-month high as investors moved toward safer assets.

The crypto-specific signal sits in the fund flows, said Mike McCluskey, co-founder of tx, in an email to CoinDesk. He called bitcoin's stabilization in the low-to-mid $60,000s a measured response to the Federal Reserve's hawkish turn, given how hard such shifts usually hit digital assets.

In a recent interview, Edelman said the disconnect between crypto prices and industry activity has become increasingly noticeable as large financial firms continue expanding their blockchain and tokenization efforts.

While cryptocurrency markets have struggled to maintain momentum amid regulatory uncertainty, Edelman said major Wall Street institutions, including BlackRock, JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley, Franklin Templeton, State Street, Invesco, and Fidelity, continue building products and services tied to digital assets.

"Crypto prices are not reflecting what's happening in the world of crypto," Edelman said, pointing to rising institutional engagement even as investors remain cautious.

StarkWare introduces 'Private KYC' to address personal data breachesZero-knowledge scaling company StarkWare has introduced Private KYC on Starknet, enabling users to complete know-your-customer requirements without revealing their full personal information.

The system, announced Tuesday as a demo, uses STRK20 privacy features and zero-knowledge STARK proofs to let users prove specific attributes, such as being older than 18 or holding valid credentials, without revealing their full passport details or address.

“Whether you need to prove you’re over 18, hold a valid credential or meet an eligibility rule, verification should only confirm the precise fact,” StarkWare said. Corporations should not collect the full identity behind it, “because every identity database becomes a liability the moment it exists.”

KYC compliance involves handing over personal information and trusting companies to keep it safe. The rollout comes as the US hit a record 3,322 data compromises in 2025, a 79% increase over five years, and the global average cost of a data breach is $4.4 million, according to StationX.

StarkWare users start by scanning their passport on their phones, using the camera and NFC chip to read and confirm the document is genuine and signed by its issuing authority.

They can then encrypt identity data to their Starknet wallet, register attributes in a public onchain registry, and submit zero-knowledge proofs for selective checks. Verifiers can confirm eligibility by reading the public registry without ever seeing the actual identity data.

“Private KYC shows that verification and privacy aren’t a trade-off,” StarkWare said. “An institution can confirm exactly what it needs without assembling another copy of someone’s identity it then has to defend.”
