How Did Telegram Turn Its Messaging App Into a Crypto Gateway?Telegram built a crypto infrastructure layer directly inside its messaging app by making The Open Network (TON) blockchain the exclusive engine for payments, mini apps, and digital asset transactions across its more than 1 billion monthly active users.

Telegram reached 1 billion monthly active users in March 2025, marking a 2,757% increase from 35 million users at launch in 2014. The result is the largest consumer-facing crypto distribution channel ever assembled inside a single app, where users can send money, buy digital goods, and interact with decentralized applications without downloading anything extra.

From a Banned Token to a Billion-User Blockchain
The story starts with a legal setback. The Open Network began life as the "Telegram Open Network," a Layer-1 blockchain unveiled by Telegram's founders in 2018 to extend the app beyond messaging. After the SEC challenged Telegram's 2018 private token sale, a US court blocked distribution of the original "Grams" token in 2020, and Telegram formally withdrew.

That separation proved temporary. Independent developers revived the codebase as "The Open Network," and a community-run TON Foundation brought the mainnet online while Telegram continued separately as a company.

The reunion happened in stages. In January 2025, the TON Foundation announced that TON became the exclusive blockchain infrastructure powering Telegram's Mini App ecosystem. Toncoin became the only cryptocurrency accepted for non-fiat payments for Telegram services, including Telegram Stars, Telegram Premium, Telegram Ads, and Telegram Gateway. Toncoin also became the only currency used to pay Mini App developers and channel owners for earned Stars and advertisement revenue.

Franklin Templeton closes 250 Digital acquisition deal and sets up new Franklin Crypto divisionThe $1.7 trillion asset manager Franklin Templeton is establishing a new dedicated active crypto investment management arm through acquisition of 250 Digital.

Franklin Templeton has established Franklin Crypto to offer institutional investors actively managed cryptocurrency strategies the asset manager said in a statement.

The San Mateo, California-based asset manager first announced the acquisition and the new crypto division in April as part of its increasing push into digital assets. It has not disclosed financial terms of the deal

The new division will combine the investment capabilities of the former 250 Digital team with Franklin Templeton’s global distribution. Franklin Templeton will also invest its own capital into these liquid strategies as part of the closing agreement.

The new unit absorbs the entire 250 Digital investment team, alongside all liquid cryptocurrency strategies they previously ran under CoinFund, according to the statement.

Crypto industry veterans Christopher Perkins and Seth Ginns will co-lead the new division. Perkins will serve as Head of Franklin Crypto and Chief Investment Officer respectively.

Ripple, the blockchain company behind the XRP Ledger, is on its way to regulatory approval in the European Union (EU) via licensing in Luxembourg.

The San Francisco, California-based firm received a preliminary green light for a Crypto Asset Service Provider (CASP) license from the country's Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier (CSSF) under the EU’s Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) regulation, Ripple said Tuesday.

A license would enable Ripple to offer its stablecoin payment systems to European companies and allow it to expand into broader crypto functions, according to the announcement.

MiCA allows companies that receive approval in one EU state to offer cryptocurrency services across the bloc.

The regime was one of the first comprehensive regulatory frameworks for cryptocurrency in a major market when it was voted into law in 2023, but there has been signs this year that the honeymoon period is coming to an end. The European Commission, the EU's executive branch, opened a consultation last month to assess if MiCA is still fit for purpose.

The layoffs, announced Tuesday in a blog post, conclude a months-long internal reorganization tied to the implementation of the Foundation’s updated mandate and treasury policy. The EF said the reduction leaves it “leaner and more focused,” with a structure aligned around what it described as the “critical tasks” needed to support Ethereum’s long-term development.

The reduction follows a period of significant upheaval at the organization’s leadership level. Co-executive director Hsiao-Wei Wang stepped down earlier this month, following the prior departure of co-executive director Tomasz Stańczak. Board member Bastian Aue has since assumed expanded responsibilities overseeing the transition and day-to-day operations.

For ADA traders, the technical roadmap matters because price sentiment has remained under pressure. A credible scaling milestone can improve the narrative, but it still needs to be matched by developer activity, liquidity and applications that users actually want.


The risk is timing. Testnet progress can excite the community, but markets often wait for mainnet delivery and measurable usage before repricing a network. Cardano therefore has to prove both that Leios works technically and that it supports real demand.

There is also a practical newsroom reason this story matters today: it gives traders a concrete development to anchor against price action instead of treating the market as a blur of headlines. When a story has a clear source, a defined institution, and a direct link to regulation, liquidity, security or adoption, it is easier to separate signal from noise. That does not mean the market has to move immediately, but it does mean the development belongs on the watchlist while Bitcoin, Ethereum and major altcoins continue to trade around sensitive support and resistance zones.

The cleanest way to read the update is as part of a broader market-structure shift. Crypto is becoming more institutional, more policy-sensitive and more dependent on regulated access points. That makes each verified development useful not only for the asset directly involved, but also for understanding where capital, builders and regulators are concentrating attention next.
