Bittensor validator warns Root Reborn proposal carries “substantial” risks
Yuma, one of Bittensor’s largest contributors and the network’s third-largest validator, has published a detailed critique of the proposed “Root Reborn” upgrade, arguing that the design introduces governance, regulatory, and market structure risks that outweigh its potential benefits.

The proposal, currently under review and not yet active on mainnet, would overhaul how root staking rewards are handled. Under the existing system, root dividends are effectively paid by automatically converting subnet alpha emissions back into $TAO. The new design would stop those automatic sales.
Instead, validators would set allocation weights across subnets. Root emissions would then be deployed into validator-selected baskets of subnet tokens, with stakers receiving redeemable claims on those positions rather than direct $TAO rewards.

The proposal states that the change would reduce automatic sell pressure on subnet assets and make validator allocation decisions a more important part of the network economy. It would also introduce new tools to track validator basket net asset value, subnet allocations, staker liabilities, and network-wide basket performance.

Yuma said the proposal changes the role of validators from infrastructure operators into active allocators of capital.

As of mid-June 2026, the CLARITY Act, the most comprehensive crypto market-structure bill ever to advance in the United States, has reached the stage where only one thing stands between it and becoming law: votes. Much of that growth traces back to protocol-level performance, with usage and key product metrics trending higher and pointing to growing confidence among investors who want to hold and use the token. Notably, the token’s holder count has reached a new all-time high of 131,400.

Market analysis points to a strong chance that EtherFi sustains its upward move, particularly as total value locked (TVL) continues to climb.

TVL measures a protocol’s health by tracking how much capital users have locked into it. Capital tends to flow in for one of two reasons, the expectation of earning yield, or a longer-term conviction in the protocol’s outlook. Since the 7th of June, Ether.Fi‘s TVL has surged by $283 million to roughly $3.114 billion at the time of writing.

On the protocol side, the EtherFi Cash Card has been one of the products driving usage, with transaction fees climbing to their highest level yet, $2.72 million, since the card launched in Q2 2026.Other revenue lines for $ETHFI have continued to scale. Borrow interest, which measures the interest earned on the Cash lending operation, has climbed to its highest level yet at $177,810 for Q2 2026.

This surge comes as investors have largely stayed protective of their capital in a risk-off environment, conditions that often pull liquidity away from DeFi protocols. However, EtherFi appears to be running counter to that trend.

Overall protocol earnings have reached $8.85 million this quarter, short of the levels seen in previous quarters going back to Q2 2025. Volume has also stayed relatively low, with just $18.94 million in on-chain volume and a seven-day fee total of $2.55 million.
