Leadership turmoil deepens at Ethereum Foundation as Josh Stark announces sudden exit


A key leader, core member, and executive at the Ethereum Foundation (EF), Josh Stark, announced his resignation from the Swiss-based non-profit after five years of dedicated service, underscoring that leadership issues within the Ethereum Foundation are on the rise.

Stark’s decision sparked controversy, as he failed to disclose the key reason for his departure. What he noted on his X account was that he had not formulated any future objectives. Instead, Stark alleged that he is taking a break to spend time with family and friends.

“The Ethereum ecosystem has consistently achieved what many believed was impossible. It’s easy to forget how much real fear and doubt existed about whether Ethereum would ever launch, if decentralized finance (DeFi) would succeed, or if Proof of Stake would actually be implemented,” the senior EF official said.

According to reports, Stark is among four senior members of the Ethereum Foundation’s leadership team, with most staff reporting to this group. Attempts by journalists to seek further clarification on his resignation were unsuccessful, as he declined to comment.

The resignation comes amid broader concerns about turnover within the Ethereum ecosystem. Earlier, Danny Ryan, a Researcher at the EF, submitted a proposal to Ethereum’s primary co-founder, Vitalik Buterin, dated November 2024, regarding a significant transformation for the network. Notably, Ryan had served in the EF organization for seven years. The Ethereum Foundation acts as the primary governing authority for Ethereum.

UAE investors buy AI dip, keep crypto exposure despite conflict


United Arab Emirates investors are leaning into the artificial intelligence sell-off rather than running from it, despite the regional conflict testing the Gulf’s ambitions to become a global hub for AI and digital assets.

New eToro data shared with Cointelegraph on Wednesday show users in the UAE boosted holdings of software and AI infrastructure names whose share prices fell sharply in the first quarter, suggesting they used the downturn to “buy the dip” rather than broadly de-risk.

The pattern suggests UAE investors are staying exposed to long-term AI and digital-infrastructure themes even as the conflict raises fresh risks for data centers, logistics and cross-border technology build-outs in the Gulf. An April 13 report from Deutsche Bank said the shock is more likely to sharpen rather than derail demand for AI, cybersecurity and sovereign digital infrastructure in the region.

Josh Gilbert, market analyst at eToro, told Cointelegraph that UAE investors became more selective over where they took risk in Q1, and investor behavior was driven by long-term themes rather than a risk-off mindset.

He said the clearest signal was across AI infrastructure and software names, pointing to ServiceNow (+125%), Super Micro Computer (+65%), Adobe (+54%) and Oracle (+38%), which all saw significant increases despite market pressure.

Circle Internet Group is facing a class action lawsuit led by a Drift Protocol investor claiming it failed to freeze funds stolen in a $280 million exploit of the protocol on April 1.

Withdrawals are currently halted as the team works to contain further damage. “The attacker created fake token contracts and added liquidity in fresh pools, likely misleading the oracle and validation layer,” CertiK noted. An Ethereum-backed security initiative has reported recovering or freezing more than $5.8 million in funds. Also, it identified around 100 suspected North Korean [DPRK] operatives embedded across Web3 projects.

The figures come from the six-month $ETH Rangers Program, launched by the Ethereum Foundation in partnership with industry groups. Also, the program funded independent security research and incident response across the ecosystem.

Program surfaces vulnerabilities and active threats

According to the report, participants in the program identified or cataloged more than 785 vulnerabilities, client bugs, and proof-of-concept exploits during the initiative.

The work also included over 36 incident responses, as well as the development of open-source security tools and research frameworks to improve threat detection and mitigation across Ethereum-based applications.

These efforts contributed to direct fund recovery in several cases, including coordinated responses to active exploits, during which assets were traced and frozen.

DPRK-linked infiltration emerges as key concern

One of the more significant findings involved the identification of approximately 100 suspected DPRK-linked IT workers operating within blockchain projects under false identities.

Researchers involved in the program said they engaged with dozens of teams to flag potential infiltrations, with some cases leading to the freezing of funds linked to these actors.

The findings highlight a growing concern within the crypto industry around state-linked threat groups targeting Web3 firms through employment channels, rather than traditional attack vectors alone.
