Here's what 'cracking' bitcoin in 9 minutes by quantum computers actually means



Google's Quantum AI team said earlier this week that a future quantum computer could derive a bitcoin private key from a public key in roughly nine minutes. The number ricocheted across social media and spooked markets.

But, what does it actually mean in practice?

Let's start with how bitcoin transactions work. When you send bitcoin, your wallet signs the transaction with a private key, a secret number that proves you own the coins.

That signature also reveals your public key, a shareable address, which gets broadcast to the network and sits in a waiting area called the mempool until a miner includes it in a block. On average, that confirmation takes about 10 minutes.

Your private key and public key are linked by a math problem called the elliptic curve discrete logarithm problem. Classical computers can't reverse that math in any useful timeframe, while a sufficiently powerful future quantum computer running an algorithm called Shor's could.

Here's where the nine minutes part comes in. Google's paper found that a quantum computer could be "primed" in advance by pre-computing the parts of the attack that don't depend on any specific public key.

Once your public key appears in the mempool, the machine only needs about nine minutes to finish the job and derive your private key. Bitcoin's average confirmation time is 10 minutes. That gives the attacker a roughly 41% chance of deriving your key and redirecting your funds before the original transaction confirms.

Think of it like a thief spending hours building a universal safe-cracking machine (pre-computation). The machine works for any safe, but each time a new safe appears, it only needs a few final adjustments — and that last step is what takes about nine minutes.

As noted by Maartunn in a recent post on X, the Exchange Inflow measures the total amount of an asset being transferred to wallets connected to centralized exchanges.
Typically, investors move tokens to these exchanges when they intend to sell. So a sharp increase in Exchange Inflow often signals heightened selling pressure, which can put downward pressure on assets like Bitcoin.
For a stablecoin such as USDC, however, the effect is different. Because its value is pegged around $1, large inflows don’t impact the price in the same way—they simply reflect increased trading activity rather than market volatility.

Further downside was possible. Short-term holders were intent on protecting their profits or trying to exit the market at a breakeven, capping the potential of any rally.

Yet, the higher timeframe price action was at an interesting place where a price bounce could not be ruled out completely.

Explaining Bitcoin’s trend expectations

The swing moves on the 3-day timeframe were captured in white. The latest bounce amid the downtrend came in February and was incomplete. There’s a reason why it is considered incomplete.

In October 2025, when the swing structure was bullish, Bitcoin made a double top at $124.4k. This inability to continue the uptrend was an early warning sign of weakness from the bulls.

Subsequently, the swing structure shifted bearishly after the $107.2k low was breached in early November.

Consider the price action since February. The $60k swing low resulted in a bounce that has not climbed above the 50% retracement level.

Many analysts consider the area above the 50% retracement as “premium,” and a move into this area is more likely to result in the next bearish swing move.

The threshold was at $78.9k, and the latest bounce only reached $76k. After this bounce, Bitcoin has not yet climbed below the $60k swing low.

Expectations for Bitcoin’s next move

On Wednesday, the blockchain services provider said that the new TMS will feature digital asset accounts and a unified treasury. Notably, firms can send and receive XRP and Ripple’s stablecoin RLUSD through the digital asset accounts.

Similarly, fiat and crypto assets can be viewed and managed through the unified treasury feature. The new TMS will run on top of Ripple’s GTreasury.

The move follows Ripple’s acquisition of GTreasury last October for $1 billion. This is a popular platform which most Fortune 500 companies use for traditional cash management across the globe.

Therefore, the latest features mean the firm is aiming to help firms to easily manage their digital assets too with familiar audit trails.

However, Ripple isn’t stopping at treasury management.
