Coinbase shares slide on $400M Q1 loss, revenue miss

Coinbase shares slid Thursday after the US crypto exchange reported a steep first-quarter loss while revenue missed Wall Street expectations.

Coinbase reported a net loss of $394.1 million in Q1, its second consecutive quarterly loss after reporting a $667 million loss in Q4 2025. It swung from a $65.6 million profit a year earlier.

“Macro conditions were genuinely tough,” Coinbase chief financial officer Alesia Haas told investors on an earnings call. “Total crypto market cap and total crypto trading volume were both down more than 20% quarter-over-quarter.”

Coinbase’s earnings come as other crypto companies have also struggled to turn a profit in the first months of 2026 as a crypto market slump pushed some traders to other investments.

Meanwhile, Coinbase’s Q1 revenue was $1.41 billion, missing analyst estimates of $1.5 billion. Transaction revenue slumped 40%, while subscription and services revenue — representing its business outside trading — fell 13.5% from a year earlier.

Its earnings per share were a $1.49 loss, compared to analysts' expectations of 36 cents per share, which saw Coinbase dropping by 4.7% after hours on Thursday to under $184.

Coinbase’s stock has fallen more than 14.5% this year, prompting the exchange to pursue new business lines such as prediction markets and cost-cutting measures, including laying off 14% of its workforce, or about 700 employees, on Monday.

Despite the company’s earnings, CEO Brian Armstrong struck an optimistic tone on the earnings call, telling investors that “the world economy is moving on-chain, and Coinbase was built to capitalize on this transition.”

Stablecoins are emerging as one of the most closely watched developments in global finance, as banks, payment firms, and technology companies explore blockchain-based alternatives to traditional payment rails.

According to a16z crypto’s April 24 report, stablecoin transfer volume reached $4.5 trillion in the first quarter of 2026, with usage increasingly tied to payments rather than speculative trading.Industry executives say the appeal lies in continuous settlement and lower operational costs.

Financial infrastructure provider Finzly notes that stablecoins can streamline cross-border payments by settling continuously on blockchain networks instead of depending on banking hours and correspondent chains.

Retail Banker International reports that stablecoins are slowly entering real-world commerce as merchants test blockchain-based settlement.

Large payment and technology firms are positioning themselves around the trend. Reuters reported in January that Visa continues exploring stablecoin settlement infrastructure. “You still have to come back and connect to the existing merchant acceptance ecosystem,” Visa’s head of crypto Cuy Sheffield told Reuters.

Technology companies are also testing stablecoins for AI-powered commerce. The Block reported that Amazon Web Services is working with Coinbase and Stripe to support USDC payments for AI agents, allowing autonomous software systems to transact without relying on conventional banking rails.

Less Bitcoin being mined, plus institutions aggressively buying, equals a supply shock that forces another leg higher.

On Ethereum, DeepSeek is eyeing $4,500 to $5,000. The model is pointing at the Dencun upgrade, rising staking yields, and ETF speculation around ETH products all hitting simultaneously.

DeepSeek thinks institutions are starting to treat staking yields like a legitimate income stream, not just a crypto gimmick. Base case lands at $3,800.

But if gas fees spike again or Layer 2 competitors start eating Ethereum’s lunch, DeepSeek sees $3,100 as the ugly alternative.

Mind you, this is a dream right now for many Ethereum holders. This basically means he is bullish anyway.

On XRP, DeepSeek is targeting $1.80 to $2.20. The entire thesis rests on one thing. Regulatory clarity.

DeepSeek does not think XRP needs a full-blown meme season to run. It just needs the SEC situation to be resolved and Ripple’s payment network to get a clean legal runway.

In a keynote speech at the Consensus crypto conference in Miami, Lee admitted they had achieved this milestone unexpectedly quickly. Initially, they thought it would take five years.

BitMine seeks to remain competitive in the crypto industry 

BitMine purchases more than 100,000 ETH weekly. This acquisition is approximately $230 million. However, Lee hinted that the company might stop buying once holdings exceed 5.18 million ETH. 

“I believe we will reduce our buying speed. I’m not sure we want to reach 5% too quickly,” the Chairman asserted. Regarding BitMine’s goal, he argued that, “If we keep buying 100,000 ETH each week, we’ll hit that target in about six weeks.” 

Afterward, Lee noted that they are slowing the accumulation to focus on other crypto opportunities. He did not outline these opportunities but mentioned that his firm’s diverse activities were beneficial.

Other achievements BitMine accomplished include introducing the Made in America Validator Network (MAVAN) for Ethereum staking. It has also made investments in MrBeast’s Beast Industries and Eightco.

Lee commented, “In our opinion, the risk versus reward looks great for BitMine since we have many investments out there.”  “We’re involved in Ethereum, staking, several high-risk opportunities, and of course the stock,” he added.

He also said Coinbase is transforming from a "spot-focused crypto platform to a place" where users can trade many asset classes, including derivatives, commodities, and futures trading, and prediction markets event contracts.
