CFTC probes oil futures trades tied to Trump's moves in Iran: Report



The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission is reportedly investigating suspicious oil trades that were placed ahead of certain announcements made by the Trump administration relating to the Iran war.

According to a Bloomberg report on Wednesday, the CFTC’s probe focuses on trading activity on CME Group’s NYMEX and the Intercontinental Exchange’s futures platforms.

The regulator is also requesting “Tag 50” identity data from exchanges to assist with the investigation. Tag 50 data is widely used for auditing and regulatory compliance checks.

The investigation into the futures trading platforms comes in parallel with the rising scrutiny of insider trading in prediction markets.

Bloomberg said the CFTC is reviewing at least two instances over a two-week period in which oil trading volumes surged shortly before the Trump administration made announcements related to the Iran war.

The first of those occurred on March 23, when billions of dollars in futures traded about 15 minutes before US President Donald Trump postponed plans to strike Iranian energy infrastructure.

The second instance occurred around two weeks later, on April 7, when Trump announced a two-week ceasefire on Iran, Bloomberg said.

The trading spikes contributed to falling oil prices and rising equity prices.

“There’s enormous appetite to pursue cases like this,” said Brian Young, a partner at law firm Jones Day who previously served as director of the CFTC’s enforcement division.

Ripple has signed a remarkable partnership agreement with Kyobo Life Insurance, one of South Korea’s leading insurance companies.

The parties announced they have launched a joint project to digitize and expedite the government bond clearing process using blockchain technology.

According to the announcement, this agreement marks Ripple’s first partnership with a South Korean insurance company. The project aims to tokenize government bond transactions using Ripple’s “Ripple Custody” platform.

This aims to reduce the T+2 settlement period, commonly used in traditional markets, to a near real-time level.

However, the parties stated that the project is still in its early stages and did not share any concrete information regarding the exact transaction volume, implementation schedule, or which bond types will be covered. The statements emphasized that the collaboration is primarily a pilot project aimed at testing technical and regulatory feasibility.

Kyobo Life also plans to explore stablecoin-based payment solutions in collaboration with Ripple. However, which stablecoin will be used or when the application will be launched has not yet been announced.

Experts point out that this development is part of the accelerating trend of corporate tokenization in Asia. The faster progress of countries like South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore in digital asset regulation, in particular, makes the region stand out in this field.

Ripple is reportedly aiming to strengthen its position in the financial infrastructure sector through increasing institutional collaborations in Asia in recent years.

Paxos Labs raises $12mln to solve THIS DeFi ‘product problem’

Paxos Labs has raised $12 million to solve what the project calls DeFi’s ‘product problem.’ Notably, Paxos Labs is a spin-off of the crypto infrastructure firm Paxos. 

Through its new Amplify, Paxos Labs believes it can make it super easy for users to earn yield, borrow, and lend assets at scale. 

In a statement, Spencer Bogart, general partner at Blockchain Capital, an early investor and one of the key firms that led the latest fundraising round, said,

The infrastructure problem is largely solved. The product problem, what users and platforms actually do with these assets on-chain, is the largest open opportunity in fintech today, and this is the team to build it.

For the unfamiliar, Paxos is a white-label issuer or simply a service provider that helps other firms to create and manage their branded stablecoins. 

However, the Paxos Labs spin-off was necessary to address the lack of clarity associated with DeFi regulation. Now, the team wants to go beyond branded stablecoins. 

Paxos Labs’ Amplify plans

Amplify is a new stack by Paxos Labs that allows users to mint, earn, and borrow assets. For institutions, Amplify aims to help apps and other fintechs make on-chain assets more productive.

The end goal? Empower users to earn yield.

Charles Hoskinson used a lengthy video address this week to deliver what he described as a long overdue reckoning for Bitcoin maximalists, centred on a quantum computing threat he says is no longer theoretical and a proposed fix he says does not actually work.

As of March 1, 2026, over 34% of all Bitcoin has had its public key exposed on-chain, either through address reuse or legacy pay-to-public-key-hash formats. That represents approximately 8 million Bitcoin that could be stolen by an attacker with a sufficiently powerful quantum computer. Based on current research timelines, Hoskinson places that threat arriving in the 2030s.

“Not hypothetically one magical day in the future when unicorns fart rainbows,” he said. “In the 2030s. Right in front of your face.”

The Proposal That Does Not Solve the Problem

A Bitcoin Improvement Proposal currently circulating, BIP-361, attempts to address the vulnerability by freezing quantum-vulnerable funds and forcing a migration to post-quantum addresses. Hoskinson spent considerable time dissecting why he believes it fails on its own terms.

The proposal claims to be a soft fork. Hoskinson says it is not. It would require a hard fork, something Bitcoin has never done and, by the religion of its maximalist community, never will.

More critically, the proposed zero-knowledge proof recovery system only works for wallets built on the BIP-39 seed phrase standard, which was not introduced until 2013. Approximately 1.7 million Bitcoin, including an estimated 1.1 million belonging to Satoshi Nakamoto, exist in legacy wallet formats that predate this standard. There is no zero-knowledge proof that can recover those coins.

Bitcoin rally is taking a breather near $75,000. Onchain data shows why

Bitcoin has climbed nearly 10% this month, but the rally is running into resistance near $75,000. The pause is notable as U.S. stocks push to record highs.

On-chain data shows holders are selling into strength, helping explain the slowdown.

It is evident from an on-chain indicator called realized profit/loss, which tracks the total dollar value of gains or losses locked in by holders when they move their coins on-chain. The indicator compares the current price at which coins are being moved with the price at which they last moved (the assumed acquisition cost), effectively showing whether investors are selling at a profit or a loss.

Values above 1 indicate increased profit-taking, and the 30-day exponential moving average (EMA) is currently well above that threshold. The EMA is used to smooth out day-to-day noise and highlight the broader trend in realized profits.

"Profit-taking activity is rising, with the 30D EMA of the Realized Profit/Loss Ratio at 1.16, indicating investors are selling into strength. A sustained move above $78.1K will require the market to absorb this overhead supply," the firm said in a report.

Profit-taking was particularly strong on Tuesday as Bitcoin briefly climbed toward $76,000 before quickly slipping back below $75,000. According to CryptoQuant, investors realized about $1.14 billion in profits during the move, one of the largest single-day readings this year.

The indicator, though widely tracked, has limitations, mainly that it assumes coins moving on-chain are being sold. In reality, they may simply be moving between wallets or exchanges for custody, rebalancing, or internal transfers.
