Bitcoin dipped below $78,000 Saturday morning amid fears that the U.S. and Israel are about to resume bombing Iranian facilities. Bitstamp data show that the top cryptocurrency dropped to a session low of $77,614 before recovering and consolidating around $78,000. The slide continues a downward trend that has seen the asset shed approximately $4,000 since tapping $82,000 on May 14.

The cryptocurrency’s plunge brought its 24-hour losses to 3.2 percent and effectively wiped out the gains bitcoin has made since the start of the month. It also dragged down its market capitalization to $1.56 trillion, a drop of more than $40 billion from the $1.6 trillion mark recorded Thursday.

According to a New York Times report, any escalation in hostilities would likely trigger a two-pronged U.S. military strategy: intensified, high-precision airstrikes targeting Iranian command-and-control infrastructure, alongside highly specialized ground operations designed to neutralize and retrieve enriched nuclear material secured deep within the subterranean facilities at Isfahan.

South Korea To Unveil Tokenized Securities Rules In July As Crypto Regulation Advances

 South Korean authorities are set to release detailed rules for the issuance, infrastructure, and distribution of tokenized securities, as the country advances its efforts to implement crypto market regulations in 2027.

FSC Eyes July Tokenized Securities Framework
On Friday, South Korea’s Financial Services Commission (FSC) revealed it is preparing to publish its framework for tokenized securities in July during the second meeting of the public-private joint “Token Securities Council,” launched in March.

Earlier this year, the National Assembly passed the Token Securities Institutionalization Act, which will take effect on February 4, 2027, to amend the Electronic Securities Act and the Capital Markets Act.

The changes are set to allow qualified issuers to launch tokenized securities using distributed ledger technology and enable the products to be traded as investment contract securities on brokerages and other licensed intermediaries.

FSC’s Vice Chairman Kwon Dae-young highlighted that the “upcoming token securities ecosystem must strike a balance between innovation and trust.” Therefore, the regulatory agency is reviewing measures to subordinate regulations and guidelines for the Tokenized Securities Act.

In addition, the regulator is expected to develop a phased roadmap for tokenizing existing standardized securities, such as stocks and bonds, as well as for on-chain settlements, drawing on international practices.

The crypto market lost nearly $90.3 billion in value in a single hour on May 16, pushing Bitcoin to $77,678 and triggering mass liquidations across the board.

The crypto market shed $90.3 billion in market cap in under an hour on May 16, with total valuation dropping 3.37% to around $2.59 trillion. Bitcoin ($BTC) fell to $77,678 while Ethereum (ETH), $XRP ($XRP), Solana (SOL), and Dogecoin (DOGE) each posted losses between 3.5% and 6%.

The sell-off was not crypto-specific. It was driven by a macro repricing event that spilled across global risk assets.

New U.S. PPI data released this week came in roughly 6% above analyst forecasts, the highest reading since December 2022, according to official data. April CPI had already printed at 3.8%. Together, the back-to-back inflation prints effectively ended near-term hopes for Federal Reserve rate cuts, with CME FedWatch showing more than 44% probability of a rate hike by December. Traders sold risky assets fast.

Bitcoin has recently tracked the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (IWM), which follows small-cap U.S. stocks that are highly sensitive to rate expectations. As small-caps fell sharply on the inflation data, Bitcoin followed without delay.
