The US Department of Justice has officially launched a compensation process for victims of the $4 billion OneCoin cryptocurrency fraud, marking a significant step toward justice for millions affected worldwide.

According to authorities, more than $40 million in forfeited assets has been made available for individuals who purchased OneCoin between 2014 and 2019 and suffered financial losses. This initiative aims to partially recover funds for victims of one of the largest crypto Ponzi schemes in history.

OneCoin was founded in 2014 by Ruja Ignatova and Karl Sebastian Greenwood in Bulgaria, with bold claims of surpassing Bitcoin. At its peak, it was promoted as one of the largest cryptocurrencies globally. However, investigations later revealed that the project had no real blockchain or utility, operating purely as a fraudulent scheme.

The scam is estimated to have defrauded over 3.5 million people, with global losses exceeding $4 billion and possibly reaching as high as $19 billion. Greenwood was arrested and sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2023 for his role in the fraud.

Meanwhile, Ignatova disappeared in 2017 and remains one of the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted fugitives, with a $5 million reward offered for information leading to her capture.

Although the compensation cannot fully cover the losses, this move represents an important effort by authorities to return funds and hold those responsible accountable.

The result was a cascade of $425 million in short liquidations, part of a total $530 million wiped from leveraged positions on the day. When shorts get forced out at scale, they buy to close their positions, which adds buying pressure on top of buying pressure. That mechanical dynamic is why the move looked so sudden and aggressive.

Over $300 million in crypto shorts were liquidated in the 12-hour window around Bitcoin's spike to $74,500.
