Amazon is reportedly close to finalizing a deal involving Globalstar, with Bloomberg suggesting an official announcement could come as early as Tuesday. The move has drawn renewed attention to Amazon’s long-term ambitions in satellite communications and its broader competition with Starlink.
At the same time, Goldman Sachs slightly lowered its Amazon price target from $280 to $275 while maintaining a Buy rating ahead of upcoming earnings. Despite the adjustment, Wall Street remains broadly optimistic, with a Strong Buy consensus and price targets ranging widely from $175 to $360. Amazon shares currently trade around $239.89, still below most analyst targets.
A Push to Close the Gap With Starlink
If completed, the Amazon–Globalstar deal would give Amazon a faster path into the satellite internet race. Amazon’s Project Leo currently has around 180 satellites in orbit, but it still lags significantly behind SpaceX’s Starlink network, which operates more than 10,000 satellites.
Acquiring Globalstar’s spectrum assets and ground infrastructure could allow Amazon to scale more quickly than building entirely from scratch. The deal also includes access to valuable L-band spectrum licenses across more than 120 countries, strengthening Amazon’s global communications footprint.
However, the deal is not without complications. Apple, which holds a significant stake in Globalstar following a $1.5 billion investment, may need to approve any final agreement.
From Cloud to Space: Amazon’s Expanding Ambition
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has previously highlighted the strategic importance of Project Leo, emphasizing its potential advantages in performance, cost efficiency, and integration with AWS.
He noted that the system is expected to deliver significantly improved uplink and downlink performance while reducing costs and enabling seamless data integration with Amazon’s cloud and AI infrastructure.
