TON price doubles after Telegram made a move critics say cuts against crypto’s core promiseToncoin ($TON) surged from roughly $1.32 on May 1 to an intraday high of $2.90 by May 7, pushing its market cap to approximately $7.8 billion.

Toncoin climbed from $1.32 on May 1 to an intraday high of $2.90 on May 7 after Durov announced Telegram would take over $TON's governance.

In January 2025, Telegram and $TON formalized exclusivity agreements that went far beyond branding.

By purging speculators, who often exit during price spikes to take profits or during dips out of fear, the remaining supply consolidates into the hands of high-conviction, long-term holders.

This process effectively reduces the liquid supply available on the open market, meaning even modest surges in future demand could trigger massive price movements. Historical precedents support this outlook; in mid-2024, a massive exit of 964,000 wallets over five weeks ultimately laid the structural foundation for a major market recovery.

Meanwhile, this retreat of retailers is the opposite of institutional behavior. CryptoQuant data shows that Bitcoin accumulation among large-scale institutions is accelerating, indicating a return of institutional confidence. This “smart money” pivot is unique to the apex cryptocurrency, as Ethereum continues to show signs of hesitation and has yet to regain the level of institutional conviction seen in the apex cryptocurrency.

Despite these constructive underlying dynamics, the immediate price action still appears suppressed by global instability. Bitcoin surged 1.59% over the last 24 hours to $80,321.22, underperforming a largely flat crypto market.

The decline is likely still being driven by a risk-off reaction to escalating geopolitical tensions following Iran’s rejection of a U.S. peace proposal.

The analysts maintained an outperform rating and $330 price target on Coinbase stock despite weaker first-quarter results tied to softer crypto market conditions.

Bernstein said Coinbase (COIN) is beginning to show signs that its push to become an "everything exchange" is working, despite the company reporting weaker-than-expected first-quarter results on Thursday.

In a note to clients on Friday, the research and brokerage firm's analysts, led by Gautam Chhugani, maintained an outperform rating and $330 price target on Coinbase stock following earnings, implying 71% upside potential from Thursday's closing price of 192.96, according to The Block's COIN price page.

Coinbase's revenue for the quarter came in at $1.41 billion, missing estimates by 5%, while adjusted EBITDA of $303 million fell 26% short of expectations. The company also posted a net loss of $394.1 million, reflecting $482 million in unrealized losses tied to its crypto investment portfolio. Bernstein said weaker crypto markets weighed on both trading activity and subscription revenue, with total crypto market capitalization and industry trading volumes both down more than 20% from the prior quarter. 

Coinbase's total spot trading volume dropped 25% quarter-over-quarter to $202 billion in the first quarter. Retail trading volume fell 36% to $36 billion, while monthly transacting users declined 10% to 8.2 million.
