Vitalik Buterin was targeted by a sandwich attack on April 30 after swapping a small amount of DigitalBits for Ether.  Summary Vitalik Buterin’s small XDB swap was sandwiched by JaredfromSubway, Ethereum’s notorious MEV trading bot. The bot used about $1.14 million in WETH but likely lost money after gas. The incident renewed attention on encrypted mempools as Ethereum developers seek stronger protection against MEV. CoinDesk reported that the Ethereum co-founder exchanged about $3.86 in XDB for about $4.56 in ETH. The trade was front-run and back-run by the jaredfromsubway.eth bot in Ethereum block 24993038. The bot reportedly used about $1.14 million in wrapped Ether across SushiSwap and Uniswap V2 to move the XDB price around Buterin’s swap. This type of MEV directly extracts value from regular users by giving them poorer execution. In this case, the loss for Buterin was likely only a few cents. CoinDesk reported that the bot may have lost money after paying about $5.14 in gas fees. The case still showed how automated MEV systems scan even very small trades. JaredfromSubway is not new to Ethereum traders. In 2023, crypto.news reported that the bot used 455 ETH in 24 hours and accounted for about 7% of all Ethereum gas during that period. That same report cited tracking data showing the bot had performed about 180,000 transactions over two months. The latest Buterin case brings that history back into view, even though the trade itself was small. Alongside the pause in fighting, the deal includes a planned 1,000-for-1,000 prisoner exchange, which would represent one of the largest swaps since the conflict escalated.

Discussions between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have apparently included the possibility of extending the ceasefire beyond its initial three days, with a potential longer-term arrangement floated for as late as June 30. Prediction markets have pegged the odds of that extension at roughly 9.5%.

The Russia-Ukraine war has been a background variable in crypto markets since February 2022. During the initial stages of the conflict, Ukraine raised over $225 million in crypto donations for defense, while Russia’s strategies to circumvent sanctions included increased use of Bitcoin and stablecoins.

On the demand side, reduced conflict could lessen the premium investors place on non-sovereign stores of value. But the immediate market reaction, Bitcoin reclaiming $80,000, suggests traders are reading the ceasefire as net positive rather than a reason to rotate out.

Ng Ah Sio pointed to overall trading volume and open interest levels as evidence that most cryptocurrencies currently require relatively little marginal buying pressure to move prices higher — a setup that can amplify upside moves when they do occur.

His read is that market participants remain underallocated to most crypto assets at current levels, meaning there is room for significant capital to rotate in without hitting heavy resistance from existing positioning.

Despite the constructive setup, Ng Ah Sio was clear about what the market needs to confirm the move. Bitcoin must break through the $80,000 level cleanly and decisively — not just touch it and retreat. A definitive break above that level, he argued, would be the catalyst that unlocks the broader altcoin rally he is anticipating.

He identified ETH, SOL, and HYPE as the key altcoins to watch, noting that these assets taking the lead and establishing a clear upward trend would be the signal that a new market cycle leg is underway.
