The International Monetary Fund has downgraded its global growth outlook following a surge in energy prices triggered by the ongoing Middle East conflict. As finance officials convened for the IMF and World Bank spring meetings in Washington, the fund outlined three possible economic scenarios depending on how the war evolves.In its most optimistic projection, the IMF assumes a short-lived conflict with oil prices stabilizing around $82 per barrel by mid-2026. Under this baseline, global growth holds relatively steady. However, IMF chief economist Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas warned shortly after the report's release that this forecast may already be outdated, noting that the global economy appears to be moving closer to the "adverse scenario" — a prolonged conflict that keeps oil prices near $100 per barrel and drags worldwide growth down to 2.5% in 2026.The most alarming projection is the "severe scenario," where an escalating conflict pushes oil prices to $110 per barrel in 2026 and $125 in 2027, sending global growth plummeting to 2.0% — dangerously close to recession territory. Global inflation could exceed 6% under this outcome, potentially forcing central banks to aggressively raise interest rates.Emerging markets and developing economies face sharper impacts than advanced nations, with Middle Eastern countries bearing the heaviest economic burden. Iran, Qatar, and Iraq are projected to experience significant GDP contractions. In contrast, India stands out as a rare bright spot, with growth forecasts upgraded to 6.5% for both 2026 and 2027.The United States, benefiting from tax cuts, AI investment, and prior rate reductions, sees only a minor downgrade to 2.3% growth this year. Ripple CEO Celebrates 11 Years at Company

Brad Garlinghouse has marked his 11th anniversary at the enterprise blockchain firm Ripple.

This has been a tumultuous but extremely rewarding tenure that saw him become a central figure in the fight for U.S. cryptocurrency regulation.

Garlinghouse has stressed that the industry's years-long regulatory battles are finally nearing a resolution following a series of high-level discussions in Washington, D.C.

"The fight has been worth it," he posted, noting recent conversations with several prominent lawmakers, including Senators Bill Hagerty, Tim Scott, and John Boozman, as well as an appearance at the Semafor World Economic Summit.

Garlinghouse's Ripple journey

Garlinghouse, who has held major executive roles at legacy tech giants AOL and Yahoo, was initially skeptical of the cryptocurrency industry after being approached by former Ripple CEO Chris Larsen.

He was intending to take a position at the ride-hailing company Uber.

Ultimately, Larsen convinced him that Ripple offered a chance to change the world in a more meaningful way.

Garlinghouse joined the firm as Chief Operating Officer in April 2015. He was then elevated to CEO the following year, replacing Larsen at the top job.

Over the past 11 years, Garlinghouse has become a billionaire and has emerged victorious from the battle with the SEC.

His CLARITY Act

In his anniversary post, Garlinghouse declared that the "CLARITY Act window is open," urging the industry that "now is our moment to act."

Garlinghouse has previously admitted that Ripple technically does not have a "big dog in this fight."

Bank and crypto lobbyists have both relayed concerns over the latest proposal to end the stalemate on stablecoin yields in the Senate’s crypto market structure bill, legislation that has been in limbo since the House passed the CLARITY Act in July.

Senator Thom Tillis told Politico on Monday that he plans to publicly release a draft agreement this week that aims to end a fight over a provision in the Senate’s crypto policing bill that would ban third parties, such as crypto exchanges, from offering stablecoin yield payments.

The draft had already been seen by banking and crypto representatives earlier this month, with Politico reporting that it drew pushback from the banks, according to three people with knowledge of the matter.

“I think that people are apprehensive because they haven’t seen the full text,” Tillis said. “Directionally, it has been instructed by what we consider to be the legitimate issues that we have around deposit flight when we’re talking about yield.”

The Senate’s crypto market structure bill would outline how the country’s two major market watchdogs would regulate the sector, legislation that the crypto industry has widely pushed for with the Trump administration.

However, the bill’s progress has been stalled as banking and crypto groups have been at odds over language banning stablecoin yields, despite three White House-mediated meetings between the groups to find a middle ground.

Stablecoin yields are a major business for crypto platforms, but the bank lobby wants to outlaw third-party stablecoin yield payments, arguing it is a risk to the banking system, as customers may pull deposits out of savings accounts.
