Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong said the financial system still needs eight key upgrades before crypto-based finance can reach wider use.

His list covered RWA tokenization, 24/7 global trading, stablecoin payments, AI tools, self-custody wallets, easier capital formation, sound money, and better regulation.

Armstrong said the future system will become more global, more automated, and more on-chain. He wrote that the work is not complete until these systems serve more users, adding, “Jobs not done until we get these working for all.”

RWA tokenization leads Coinbase CEO’s upgrade list
Armstrong placed tokenization of real-world assets at the top of his list. He said real estate, stocks, bonds, and funds can move on-chain to support faster settlement, wider distribution, and fractional ownership.

The comment comes as tokenization remains a leading crypto theme in 2026. Related reports said the tokenized RWA market grew 263% year over year in 2025 and about 30% in the first quarter of 2026.

Coinbase has also tied its public strategy to this shift. In its Q1 2026 earnings call, the company said stablecoins had passed $300 billion in market value, while tokenized real-world assets were expected to reach $16 trillion by 2030.

Stablecoins and AI payments gain ground
Armstrong also named next-generation payments as a needed upgrade. He pointed to near-instant, low-cost global transfers using stablecoins, including payments made by AI agents.

Crypto King Barry Silbert: Privacy Era is Here

Digital Currency Group (DCG) founder and CEO Barry Silbert has declared on X (formerly Twitter) that "the 'privacy' era in crypto has officially begun." This appears to be growing sentiment within the cryptocurrency industry.

Zcash (ZEC), a privacy-focused altcoin that has caught the attention of Wall Street institutional investors, is now spearheading this movement after the privacy coin saw a blistering rally.

The "Bitcoin playbook"
Silbert, a long-time advocate for financial privacy, is convinced that Zcash is currently mirroring one of Bitcoin's most historic bull runs.

As reported by U.Today, the "crypto king" behind the crypto venture giant Digital Currency Group has argued that the privacy coin is executing the "2013-2014 bitcoin playbook."

Hence, BTC is currently setting the stage for a massive "2015-2020" style breakout.

Silbert believes that there is a change in how the market understands digital privacy.

In the early days of crypto, many investors (falsely) believed Bitcoin transactions were completely anonymous.

Today, however, powerful blockchain analytics firms have proven that Bitcoin's public ledger can be easily traced.

"In 2015, we had no clue there was $2 trillion in demand for a global, decentralized digital store of value like bitcoin," Silbert explained on X. "In 2015, we also thought bitcoin was, generally speaking, a private way to store and send value around the world. Zcash will benefit from not knowing better."

Zcash's implementation of zero-knowledge proofs (zk-SNARKs) makes it possible to "shielded addresses," which ensure complete privacy.

Bearish positioning had already become heavily crowded before Bitcoin’s broader market structure started showing deeper signs of instability beneath the surface. Traders also grew increasingly uncertain once ETF outflows kept weakening spot demand across already fragile liquidity conditions.

U.S. Spot Bitcoin ETFs later recorded another roughly $105.2 million in daily outflows while weekly selling moved beyond nearly $850 million. Coinbase Premium also remained negative, reflecting softer institutional participation.

Yet derivatives activity continued to stay elevated as Open Interest remained high beneath compressed volatility conditions. That setup increasingly reflected a market driven more by leverage positioning than confident spot convictions.

Some whales still appear positioned for deeper downside continuation, while others increasingly prepare for violent reversal volatility once leverage clears.

Bitcoin now sits between weakening spot demand and overcrowded leverage conditions that could break sharply in either direction.
