Bitcoin Sees 39% Drop in Active Addresses Amid Market ConsolidationBitcoin has remained on the downside, frequently retesting its previous lows as the broad crypto market continues consolidating.

Amid this, Bitcoin's network activity has slowed significantly, as the number of active addresses on the Bitcoin network recently dropped below 500,000 according to data showcased by crypto analyst Ali Martinez.

Bitcoin long-term holders show conviction
It appears that short-term holders are increasingly growing weak and they are exiting the market as the analyst revealed that Bitcoin's on-chain activity has cooled significantly over the past two weeks.

Per the data, the number of active wallet addresses holding Bitcoin has dropped from 821,000 to 494,000 within the last two weeks.

Notably, this marks a massive decline of 39.80% over the stated period. While this sharp drop happened amid the broader market consolidation, Bitcoin has continued to trade sideways as momentum fades.

Apparently, the price volatility coinciding with a major decline in active addresses indicates that short-term traders are increasingly exiting their positions.

What this means for Bitcoin
The analyst has pointed out that although decreases in network activity are usually bearish signals, the case might be a good sign for Bitcoin this time.

He noted that decreases in network activity during consolidation phases often mean that short-term holders and speculative traders are losing interest while longer-term investors maintain their positions.

As such, long-term holders are clearly showing conviction in Bitcoin as a larger share of its circulating supply is being left to long-term, high-conviction holders.

Notably, historical records show that similar periods of declining network activity have preceded major price breakouts once momentum returns to the market.

Campaign finance filings illuminate a concerted effort by crypto-aligned PACs to influence outcomes. Protect Progress, affiliated with Fairshake PAC and connected to Ripple and Coinbase networks, reported substantial expenditures in support of Menefee and in opposition to Green.
Specifically, filings show about $5 million spent to back Menefee and roughly $2.8 million directed at ads opposing Green.
Menefee also holds the endorsement of the Blockchain Leadership Fund, a coalition backed by Anchorage Digital and Chainlink Labs, though the committee's recent expenditures had not been reported as of the latest disclosures.
The Fellowship PAC, funded by Cantor Fitzgerald and Anchorage, disclosed about $500,000 spent to favor Paxton in the Senate race. The timing of that investment followed public remarks from former President Donald Trump endorsing Paxton, a move widely interpreted as a signal to conservative voters and to the donor community about Paxton's alignment on a broad set of policy priorities, including those related to crypto regulation.

Since early 2026, the pattern has repeated. US-Iran tensions flare, oil jumps, inflation expectations tick higher, and gold experiences these counterintuitive dips. Multiple instances of this dynamic have played out over recent months, creating a rhythm that traders are starting to anticipate.

Crypto markets feel the tremors

Oil-linked perpetual futures on Hyperliquid, the decentralized trading platform, surged over 5% following earlier US and Israeli strikes on Iran. During an April 2026 escalation, Bitcoin traded around $74,335 with a 1.6% pullback, coinciding with a 5.7% jump in Brent crude. Ether and Solana faced similar downward pressure during that episode.

What’s genuinely novel is the role decentralized platforms are playing in this. Hyperliquid’s oil-linked perpetuals gave traders a way to express a geopolitical view without touching traditional commodity markets. Institutional appetite for digital asset investment vehicles has declined sharply, and this situation could derail cryptocurrency’s recent macro recovery.

According to Bitcoin data-tracking firm Ecoinometrics, a massive wave of capital flight from U.S. spot crypto exchange-traded funds (ETFs) has erased weeks of steady accumulation that had nearly offset drawdowns dating back to October.

Analyst Crypto Patel revealed how, during the week of May 18 to May 22, U.S. spot crypto ETFs suffered a staggering $1.364 billion in net outflows. Bitcoin vehicles bore the brunt of the liquidations, losing $1.26 billion as institutional players shed 16,371 BTC, roughly equivalent to 36 days of mined supply.

BlackRock led the institutional retreat, offloading 13,049 BTC, alongside significant liquidations from Fidelity and ARK 21Shares. Concurrently, spot Ethereum ETFs saw $215.99 million in net outflows, shedding over 102,000 ETH, with BlackRock again pacing the market-wide selling.

Despite this institutional exit, Bitcoin demonstrated short-term resilience in spot markets. CoinMarketCap data shows Bitcoin edged up 0.80% over the past 24 hours to trade at $77,275.30, acting as a relative safe haven amid capital rotation away from volatile altcoins. The minor gain was primarily driven by easing macro risk aversion following U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of a negotiated deal with Iran on May 24.

A series of leveraged short liquidations also supported the price. CoinMarketCap analysis indicates that if Bitcoin holds above its 50-day simple moving average near $76,940, it may retest the $78,500-$79,500 resistance.

Meanwhile, Ethereum underperformed the broader market, sinking 4.22% to $2,031.22.
