THORChain Leader Accuses Tether of Temporarily Freezing USDT Vaults

THORChain technical co-founder Chad Barraford has accused stablecoin issuer Tether of blacklisting and freezing the network's USDT treasury addresses without explanation before unfreezing them hours later. In a Friday post on X, Barraford stated that Tether blacklisted THORChain treasury addresses, freezing approximately 1.45 million USDT across four wallets. Roughly two hours later, he reported that trading would resume after Tether unfroze all the addresses. Barraford noted that THORChain did not know why the decision was made and had not been contacted by Tether prior to the action. He expressed hope that the freeze was due to a mistake or misunderstanding.

XRP Expands Its Role in DeFi as Firelight Launches Vault Protection Feature

Firelight announced on October 6 that depositors into certain Sentora products now receive protection against specific failures without needing to purchase a separate policy. The DeFi investment platform initially launched this service for its "USD Protected Vault" and "Protected RWA Vaults." The activated protections operate within predefined limits. Firelight cited a 39% annual asset growth in selected vaults and a near-tripling of oracle attacks this year, which manipulate data used by lending apps. The company noted that on-chain coverage capital represents only 0.14% of the $88.3 billion locked in DeFi, highlighting the gap between investment volume and available loss coverage funds.

S&P Global Implements Risk Assessment in the Growing Sector of Crypto-Credit Vaults

S&P Global Ratings has launched a risk assessment framework for digital asset lending pools, responding to the growing popularity of on-chain investment products. The methodology evaluates pools across six key categories: portfolio credit quality risk, liquidity mismatch risk, custodian risk, blockchain risk, protocol risk, and custody & governance security risk. According to S&P, the assessments are designed to determine the risk of loss for investors in these lending pools but do not constitute credit ratings or evaluate potential returns. Analyst Lisa Schreyer noted that the framework is not intended to single out any one of the six categories as inherently riskier than the others.

$6 million disappeared from a cryptocurrency vault controlled by 7 unknown signatories

On October 4th at 09:21 UTC, security firm Blockaid detected an ongoing exploit targeting a crypto vault on Coinbase's Ethereum Layer-2 network, Base. At that time, approximately $2.02 million had already been stolen. Within about 40 minutes, the total loss escalated to over $6 million, with cybersecurity companies tracking the withdrawal of around 1,783 wstETH from the vault. A peculiar development followed: no protocol or entity has publicly claimed ownership of the compromised vault. It is managed by a "3-of-7" Safe multisignature wallet, meaning transactions require approval from 3 of its 7 designated signers. The identities of all seven signers remain unknown, leaving the multi-million dollar crime scene without a publicly acknowledged owner.

Ethereum’s zkAPI brings privacy-preserving API payments to mainnet

The Ethereum Foundation has launched zkAPI on the Ethereum mainnet, a system developed with the Open Anonymity Project. It enables users to pay for AI and other API services without disclosing their billing identities. Users deposit funds into an Ethereum vault and utilize zero-knowledge proofs to demonstrate sufficient credit for API requests, keeping their specific deposits private. A primary use case is paying for AI usage without linking payments to individual users. zkAPI generates short-lived API keys with spending limits, sending prompts directly to providers while handling payments separately. The release includes a local client, an SDK, and a browser-based AI chat implementation. This launch realizes a design proposed earlier this year for ZK-based API credits. The system provides private, prepaid access but does not conceal prompt content or network metadata like IP addresses from service providers.

Uphold Adds XRP and Bitcoin Inheritance Feature, Citing $331 Billion in 'Stuck' Funds

Uphold has launched a new service called Vault Inheritance, allowing cryptocurrency users to designate a beneficiary to inherit their digital assets, such as XRP and Bitcoin, in the event of their death. The service, announced on September 29th, operates through the Uphold Vault application-based wallet. It employs an "assisted self-custody" model, which combines user control with company support for managing and replacing the cryptographic keys needed to authorize transactions. The company cites the problem of "stuck" funds, reportedly worth $331 billion, where families inherit ownership rights but cannot access the assets due to lost credentials. The service costs $19.99 per month and includes a free 30-day trial for U.S. subscribers upon sign-up.

TopNod Wallet debuts access to Axil’s APT (Axil Pot), a T+0 on-chain yield product for everyday idle liquidity

TopNod Wallet now offers direct access to Axil's APT (Axil Pot), a new on-chain yield product designed for everyday idle liquidity. The product targets an estimated ~8% APY and provides T+0/T+7 liquidity options, allowing users to earn yield without lock-up periods. It launches with an initial $10 million capacity cap, aiming to bring a familiar cash-sweep experience from traditional finance to on-chain digital assets. Axil manages the vault with a tiered liquidity framework to balance yield, security, and instant access for smaller withdrawals. This integration simplifies access to institutional-grade yield strategies through TopNod's self-custodial wallet interface.

Zest Lets Bitcoin Back Ethereum USDC Loans Without Wrapping BTC

Zest Protocol has launched a mainnet demo of its Bitcoin Collateral Vaults, enabling Bitcoin holders to borrow USDC on Ethereum without moving or wrapping their BTC. Users deposit native BTC into self-custodial Taproot vaults on Bitcoin, while a collateral record is created on Ethereum to facilitate USDC loans. The BTC itself never leaves the Bitcoin blockchain, with all permitted destinations pre-authorized by the user. The current demo uses real assets but limits deposits to 0.001 BTC per wallet for controlled testing. The architecture is designed for future BitVM verification, aiming to reduce trust assumptions. If successful, this approach could allow native Bitcoin to serve as collateral on other chains without compromising custody or using bridges.
