Aptos Validator Count Drops 40% in Two Years, Node Distribution Concentrates in Europe and America

Aptos validator nodes have decreased by over 40% in less than two years, from 146 across 22 countries to just 84 across 13 countries. This geographic consolidation has seen nodes retreat from Asia, Africa, South America, and Australia, becoming concentrated primarily in Europe and the Americas. Two key factors drove this shift. First, network upgrades like Baby Raptr reduced block times below 50ms, making low-latency connections critical. Validator rewards are tied to proposal success rates, which suffer with higher latency, incentivizing operators to relocate closer to the core network cluster. Second, a significant financial squeeze occurred. The annual staking reward rate fell from 7% to 2.6%, while the price of APT dropped 94%. This drastically reduced USD-denominated revenue, making it unsustainable for many operators, especially those with higher costs in distant regions. This trend highlights a broader challenge for Proof-of-Stake networks: the tension between performance, economic incentives, and geographic decentralization. Performance improvements can inadvertently centralize infrastructure in low-latency zones. Meanwhile, validators earning volatile native tokens while paying fixed costs in fiat are vulnerable during market downturns, leading to a consolidation among well-funded entities like exchanges and institutions. Long-term decentralization depends on three factors: the ability of validators to endure bear markets, reducing operational costs to improve accessibility, and maintaining an open environment for new participants. Without these, network distribution can contract significantly under economic and technical pressure.
