Following the launch of spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs in the US in 2024, investors were also offered altcoin ETF products like XRP and Dogecoin in 2025. However, the latest developments in altcoin investments are of particular interest to Dogecoin investors.
In this regard, Bitwise has decided to close and liquidate BWOW, which provided access to Dogecoin, approximately 10 months after its launch.
According to an official statement from Bitwise, the decision was announced on September 10, 2026. BWOW's last trading day on the NYSE Arca is scheduled for October 14, 2026, with the full fund liquidation planned for October 22, 2026.
Dogecoin ETF Unexpectedly Closed!
Bitwise announced the decision to close and liquidate the fund. The company stated that this decision aims to optimize its product portfolio in response to changing investor needs.
The BWOW fund was launched in November 2025. According to Bitwise's own statement, the fund's shares began trading on the NYSE Arca on November 26, 2025. Thus, the fund will close after operating for approximately 10 months.
Last Transaction Date: October 14th!
According to Bitwise's plan, BWOW shares will trade for the last time on the NYSE Arca on Wednesday, October 14, 2026. Investors can sell their shares on the secondary market until this date. After trading ends on October 14, the fund will begin the process of winding down its operations.
For investors who still have holdings, the liquidation process will be based on the Net Asset Value (NAV) calculated as of October 21, 2026. Cash distributions are scheduled for October 22. Bitwise states that investors do not need to take any further action as part of this process.
Why is the Dogecoin ETF Closing?
In its official statement, Bitwise explained the closure as "optimizing its product portfolio to meet the changing needs of investors." However, the company did not cite a specific reason, such as low trading volume or lack of investor interest in BWOW, as the official justification.
Finally, in the view of experts, the news of the fund's closure is a negative signal for DOGE in terms of institutional demand and adoption. Specifically, the fact that the fund was closed just 10 months after launch, and its assets remained below $1 million, indicates limited investor demand for access to Dogecoin via an ETF.
