While Bitcoin was hitting record after record in 2025, Ethereum and altcoins showed more restrained performance compared to BTC.
Although it remains to be seen whether an altcoin growth season similar to past bull cycles will begin, an important analysis of altcoin prospects has already emerged.
According to cryptocurrency analyst Matthew Hyland, key indicators tracking the altcoin market have broken a downtrend that lasted more than a year, suggesting the possible start of a new bull market.
Significant Breakthrough in the Altcoin World!
In an analysis article posted on his X account, Matthew Hyland stated that key altcoin market indicators have exited a slump lasting over a year, and the market may be entering an uptrend.
The analyst noted that the TOTAL2 indicator, which tracks the total market capitalization of altcoins excluding Bitcoin, and the TOTAL3 indicator, excluding Bitcoin and Ethereum, have broken their year-long downtrends and are signaling growth.
Will We See Price Growth Even Larger Than the 2020-2021 Cycle?
The analyst also pointed out that the current technical structure shows similarities to past market movements. According to the analyst, a major bull cycle in the altcoin market could begin if past patterns repeat.
At this stage, Hyland noted that if past trends repeat, the new altcoin bull market could surpass the scale of the 2020-2021 cycle.
However, the analyst emphasized that it is unclear whether the breakout of technical indicators marks the start of a true bull trend or is merely a bear market rally, stating that a mere break from the downtrend does not guarantee a sustained bull market.
In the analyst's view, altcoins need to maintain current levels, reach new highs, and also spread the uptrend to the market as a whole.
