According to Alex Thorn, head of company-wide research at investment firm Galaxy, the recent guidance issued by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) on establishing digital asset classifications marks "the end of an era" for SEC policy under former Chairman Gary Gensler.

The SEC's guidance, released on Tuesday, establishes a framework for classifying digital assets into five categories: digital commodities, digital collectibles (such as non-fungible tokens (NFTs)), digital instruments, stablecoins, and tokenized securities.

Thorn stated that the new regulatory approach provides much-needed clarity for the cryptocurrency industry over the next 30 months; however, he clarified that the CLARITY for Crypto Market Structure Act must be codified into law to solidify these rules for decades to come.
