Musk's Departure from OpenAI: From 'Chasing DeepMind' to Lawsuit Over Safety
05/06 04:25
According to monitoring by Beating, during the second week of Musk's lawsuit against OpenAI, Brockman revealed on May 5 that when Musk left the OpenAI board in 2018, he stated in an all-hands meeting that he would advance AI at Tesla and "would not spend time on safety," with the primary goal of catching up to Google's DeepMind. He also mentioned, "If the sheep are making safety rules while the wolves are unrestrained, then it’s all meaningless." However, the core reason for Musk's lawsuit against OpenAI is precisely that the company has abandoned its safety mission. Brockman also disclosed that Musk had several OpenAI employees work for free for months on Tesla's Autopilot team to help restructure its technical solutions. During his first week of testimony, Musk repeatedly emphasized the significant time and resources he invested in OpenAI, but he did not mention this reverse appropriation at all.
