From July 1, any crypto-asset service provider operating in the EU without a MiCA license will be required to stop serving European clients. This marks a major turning point for the region’s digital asset ecosystem.
While early adopters such as CoinJar—already licensed under MiCA in Ireland—see the framework as a step toward a more mature and trusted market, many smaller firms are sounding the alarm. In countries like Poland, industry estimates suggest that out of roughly 2,000 registered VASPs, only a handful have secured full MiCA authorization so far.
For smaller exchanges, wallet providers, and hybrid crypto startups, the challenge is not just compliance—it’s survival. The cost of licensing, governance restructuring, and ongoing reporting requirements is pushing many companies toward a difficult decision: scale up quickly or exit the EU market entirely.
Industry voices warn that MiCA could accelerate consolidation, leaving the market dominated by large exchanges and custodians—similar to what happened in Japan after tighter regulations reshaped its crypto sector.
Decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols are also caught in a gray zone. Although MiCA includes exemptions for fully decentralized systems, the lack of clarity around what qualifies as “truly decentralized” leaves many projects in regulatory uncertainty.
EU regulators, including ESMA, maintain that MiCA is designed to support innovation while strengthening investor protection. The transition period, they argue, was intentionally structured to give firms time to adapt and ensure fair competition.
Still, a key question remains unanswered:
Will MiCA position Europe as the world’s most trusted crypto hub—or quietly push the next wave of innovation offshore?
