Ethereum loans hit $28B, widening lending lead to 10x over rivals

Token Terminal, a Web3 analytics platform, has reported that active loans on Ethereum-based lending protocols have surpassed $28 billion.

Active loans measure the value of assets currently borrowed and accruing interest across platforms like Aave, Compound, Morpho, and others on Ethereum.

Ethereum runs away with lending lead

“Active loans across lending platforms on @ethereum recently surpassed $28 billion, up ~10x from January 2023 lows,” a Token Terminal post reads.

Unlike deposits, active loans highlight the networks where onchain lending platforms are operating at scale and producing sustained interest income.

The achievement is further proof of Ethereum’s position as the primary hub for DeFi lending, driven by deep liquidity in established protocols, high trust from users as well as institutions, and network effects from being one of the earliest and most mature DeFi ecosystems.

The figure has generated buzz on X among Ethereum diehards, who continue to praise the ecosystem for attracting users and providing utility rather than just leveraging on hype and old glory.

Stablecoin issuers are winning on Ethereum

The lending and borrowing part of Ethereum’s DeFi sector is bustling, but it is not the only aspect seeing real growth. Stablecoin issuers who are using Ethereum as their primary settlement layer have also been generating billions in real revenue.

Last year alone, stablecoin issuers earned approximately $5 billion in revenue attributable to stablecoin supply deployed on Ethereum. Over the year, stablecoin supply on Ethereum reportedly increased by $50 billion, and had already surpassed $180 billion by the fourth quarter.

When markets get tough, as crypto did at the end of January, investment companies need all the help they can get to make the right decisions, fast. No surprise, then, that many are turning to AI, the shiniest new weapon in the arsenal, to analyze and suggest ways of minimizing losses and even making a profit.


Almost all (96%) executives at a surveyed group of trading firms that collectively manage around $14 trillion in assets said AI is already playing a major role in core investment processes, according to research recently carried out by Nickel Digital Asset Management. But it's not enough, a human hand is still needed, said Anatoly Crachilov, founding partner and CEO of the firm.


AI is transforming quantitative trading just as it is almost every other industry and human endeavor. Going beyond the large language models (LLMs) that seem to have permeated so much of day-to-day life, there are also machine learning and predictive AI approaches that analyze historical data to forecast what's coming next. They're weak, however, at identifying incorrect information that can lead to erroneous conclusions and poor decision-making.


“It's a very tough market. AI will not save you; it's not a savior,” Crachilov said in an interview.


Despite the slump in crypto prices that engulfed the market at the end of last month, London-based Nickel, which runs a multimanager platform allocating to more than 80 teams, remains positive for the year. “Perhaps an achievement in its own right,” Crachilov said.

According to Financial Times writer Bryce Elder, the Bitcoin mining sector, which has long been under pressure, may be shifting towards artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure due to economic difficulties.


The shift of publicly traded mining companies, particularly those based in the US, towards data center operations could be a critical turning point for the future of the industry.


According to the author, the fundamental problem with Bitcoin mining is structural: a system that ultimately results in zero net. As more capacity is added to the network, competition increases, margins narrow, and the base of costs is based on energy prices.


MARA Holdings CEO Fred Thiel stated in November that the daily block reward for miners would drop from 450 $BTC to 225 $BTC after the next halving in 2028, indicating that the math in the sector was becoming increasingly difficult. According to Thiel, unless Bitcoin shows annual growth of 50% or more, the period after 2028 and 2032 will become even tighter for miners.


Furthermore, while transaction fees were expected to replace block subsidies, this transition has not yet occurred. On-chain transaction volume remains limited, and open positions in derivatives markets have fallen to approximately $50 billion.


A notable development has recently occurred on the Bitcoin network. Network difficulty has dropped by approximately 11%, marking the largest decrease since the Chinese ban in 2021. This suggests that some miners have shut down their machines.


Hashrate, which measures total network power, also experienced a sharp decline last month. Furthermore, the fact that a larger portion of rewards went to miners of “unknown” origin strengthens the possibility that equipment manufacturers may have begun running their own operations.

FG Nexus宣布反向股票分割
