Why Bitcoin’s 55% profitable supply doesn’t confirm BTC’s full recovery yet

Bitcoin's improving profitability offers optimism, but historical trends suggest the market has yet to confirm a lasting cycle shift.
Bitcoin’s [BTC] latest recovery has improved investor profitability, though historical cycle data indicates the market has not yet crossed a decisive turning point.

Profitable supply increased from 46.2% on the 30th of June to 58% on the 21st of July. This was the lowest level in 2026. Over this time, more than 10% of the circulating supply went into realized profits as BTC bounced off the mid-$50,000s to the $60,000s.

However, at press time, the metric had retraced back to 55.2%.

Although previous recoveries in the bear markets were at least 64 percent, previous cycle highs occurred at approximately 69%, 64%, 83%, and 77%. Long-term holders are still accumulating, while short-term holders have continued to sell close to their cost basis with STH SOPR currently at 1.0.

This combination suggests that the selling pressure is easing. However, Bitcoin still needs profitability to move through the 60% to 65% range before matching the stronger recovery structure seen in previous cycles.

Trump used the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner to revive one of his longest-running political provocations, pulling out a red “Trump 2028” hat and declaring that he intended to run again.

Trump has repeatedly claimed he won the 2020 election, which he lost to Joe Biden.

Around the same time, wallets associated with the team behind Official Trump memecoin moved 10.84 million TRUMP tokens worth roughly $16.91 million, blockchain tracker Lookonchain reported.

The assets appeared likely to be routed through crypto custodian BitGo before potentially reaching exchanges. No sale has been confirmed.

The two developments are not directly connected. But their timing puts renewed attention on a cryptocurrency built around Trump’s political brand as its price falls, and more project-controlled tokens move through the market.

BitMart, a crypto exchange platform, has announced a wind-down of its trading platform after years of declining market performance. The exchange once ranked among the top 10 by trading volume before slipping to the high-teen positions.

BitMart announced that it began winding down operations on the 26th of July. This included halting registrations, deposits, and new trading activity.

Ultimately, BitMart’s exit shows how sustained competitive pressure can steadily erode an exchange’s market position until operations become difficult to sustain.

The European Union (EU) has widened its sanctions targeting Russia by banning Justin Sun-owned HTX and 13 other crypto platforms.

The platforms span the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Panama, Georgia, the Marshall Islands, Kyrgyzstan and Belarus. They include BitPapa, A7 networks and more.

According to the EU Council, these platforms have acted as conduits for blocked Russian entities to move funds and bypass existing sanctions. The transaction ban prohibits EU persons and firms from doing business with these crypto platforms. 

In particular, Justin Sun-owned HTX’s appearance on the sanctioned list is very noteworthy. The exchange was banned by the U.K in May.

To counter possible freezing of funds, HTX moved its reserves to an unknown third party and has been switching hot wallets, making it difficult to conduct sanction screening. 

However, the EU’s aggressive action to ban crypto services in a third country could exert more pressure and signal an evolution of crypto in sanction enforcement.
