A New Crypto Coliseum?

The "casino degen" narrative that surrounds crypto trading in prediction and betting platforms is turning almost literal, thanks to prediction-market giant Polymarket. Despite recently being on the spotlight for heightened ethical concerns from legislators, Polymarket and legend.trade are presenting an e-sports-inspired trading competition where crypto traders will battle it out in a live arena.

Serving as a metaphor for the current state of affairs in the crypto world, in this new event the market is literally used as the battleground (e.g. political, macro, crypto narrative markets), with traders taking positions on real-world events that settle on-chain. Let's not forget that, not so long ago, Ethereum's co-founder Vitalik Buterin warned against this perspective of the crypto market.

Data shows the transfer fees on the Bitcoin network has dropped to its lowest in 15 years, a sign of significant reduction in blockchain usage.

30-Day SMA Of Bitcoin Transaction Fees Has Seen A Massive Decline
In a new post on X, on-chain analytics firm Glassnode has discussed the latest trend in the Bitcoin Total Transaction Fees. This indicator measures, as its name suggests, the daily total amount of fees that senders are paying to the network every day.

Users attach transfer fees with their moves as compensation for the miners who handle them. The average amount of fees that senders opt for is usually related to the activity that’s occurring on the network.

The Bitcoin blockchain only has a limited capacity to process transactions, so whenever there is a high amount of transfer activity, the mempool can become clogged. When that happens, transfers can sometimes end up stuck in waiting for long.

Users who don’t want to wait for congestion to clear up can simply opt to pay a higher-than-average fee, incentivizing miners to prioritize their moves. As senders compete in this manner, the Total Transaction Fees can blow up.

In contrast, users have no need to attach any significant amount of fees with their transactions during periods of little activity, as the miners will quickly process their transfers regardless.

Now, here is the chart shared by Glassnode that shows the trend in the 30-day simple moving average (SMA) of the Bitcoin Total Transaction Fees over the history of the cryptocurrency:

As displayed in the above graph, the BTC-denominated Total Transaction Fees has witnessed its 30-day SMA go through a downtrend since the peak at the start of 2024. Interestingly, the decline maintained even as BTC observed multiple bull rallies to new all-time highs (ATHs).

Metaplanet Surpasses MARA Holdings to Become Third-Largest Corporate Bitcoin Holder

Metaplanet entered the top ranks of corporate bitcoin holders after buying 5,075 BTC for about $398 million in Q1 2026.

Tokyo-listed Metaplanet has moved into the top tier of corporate bitcoin holders after acquiring 5,075 BTC during the first quarter of 2026, a purchase valued at roughly $398 million.

The company disclosed the acquisition on April 2, confirming the purchases were completed by March 31 at an average price between $78,000 and $79,898 per bitcoin. The latest accumulation brings Metaplanet’s total holdings to 40,177 BTC, pushing it past MARA Holdings, which holds about 38,689 BTC following recent sales tied to debt management.

MARA did recently sell 15,133 bitcoin for roughly $1.1 billion between March 4 and March 25 as part of a broader effort to restructure its balance sheet. The miner, which is expanding into digital energy and AI infrastructure, said the proceeds will be used to repurchase its 0.00% convertible senior notes due in 2030 and 2031.

Metaplanet now ranks as the third-largest publicly traded bitcoin holder, trailing Strategy with more than 762,000 BTC and Twenty One Capital with 43,514 BTC, according to bitcointreasuries.net.

Iran's warning is not just a geopolitical headline. It could hit parts of the infrastructure and corporate balance sheets now tied to crypto.

What looks like a geopolitical threat aimed at US multinationals could quickly become a crypto story too.

That is because several of the companies threatened by Iran now sit inside the infrastructure, payments, and corporate treasury layers that parts of the digital-asset industry rely on.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the IRGC warned that US companies in the region would be targeted from April 1 and named firms including Microsoft, Google, Apple, Intel, IBM, Tesla, and Boeing. Other multinationals mentioned in the reports included JPMorgan Chase, Oracle, Palantir, Cisco, HP, and Nvidia.

Why this matters: Crypto is no longer exposed only through exchanges and token prices. It now depends on cloud platforms, banking rails, and public companies with Bitcoin exposure, which means geopolitical threats aimed at mainstream firms can spill into digital assets faster than many investors expect.

The group said those companies would be treated as "legitimate targets" in retaliation for US and Israeli strikes on Iran.

The US Treasury on Wednesday published a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) that launches the administration's first formal effort to implement the GENIUS Act, the new federal law governing payment stablecoins that was signed by President Donald Trump last year.

Speaking at the EthCC conference in Cannes, France, Grayscale research head Zach Pandl stated that he expects significant growth in the tokenization market.

Pandl added that it is currently worth $27 billion and represents only 0.01% of global capital markets.

According to Pandl, who noted that the tokenization sector is still in its very early stages, investors should view this process not as a one-time investment opportunity, but as a long-term path to profit.

Pandl stated that large banks and asset managers are aware of the tokenization opportunity, saying, “Two things institutions are aware of are stablecoins and tokenization.”

Pandl argued that tokenization would take place in stages, with different winners at each stage.

At this point, Pandl predicts that in the initial phase of the process, institutionally focused and permissioned networks, similar to the current financial system, will come to the forefront.

Noting that these networks solve practical problems such as privacy, identity, and control, Pandl cited Canton Network (CC), backed by Wall Street giants like DRW, Goldman Sachs, and Nasdaq, as an early winner in the tokenization sector.

Pandl suggests that in the second phase of tokenization, hybrid models where institutions connect their own blockchains with global networks may dominate.

According to Pandl, the prime example of this is Avalanche (AVAX), where hundreds of independent, corporately owned chains are connected to a layer-1 network.
