Ad Disclosure Mastercard is exploring a path to settle card flows in Ripple USD (RLUSD) through its network in a move that could bring XRP Ledger-linked stablecoin infrastructure closer to one of the world's largest payments systems. In an interview shared April 16 by XRPL Commons' Odelia Torteman, Mastercard's senior vice president for digital assets and blockchain, Christian Rau, said the company is working with Gemini on an RLUSD settlement use case and hopes to bring it live in the first half of the year. Mastercard Signals XRP Ledger Stablecoin Use CaseSpeaking at an XRPL and Global Digital Finance stablecoin roundtable in Paris, Rau framed the initiative as part of Mastercard's broader push to integrate stablecoins into existing payment rails rather than treat them as a parallel system. He said the company continues to approach the sector from a "payments first" perspective, arguing that stablecoins have now entered the mainstream of financial services and can improve how money moves across borders and between institutions. "Over the last 50, 60 years we've been constantly innovating on how payments can be safe, simple, secure," Rau said. "And if you then fast forward to five years back or two years back, you will realize that stablecoins arrived in the financial services mainstream. And we believe that the benefits that they bring in terms of settlement cycles, money moving globally freely, they can definitely add to further driving sustainable innovation in the financial services and payment ecosystem. SEC charges Donald Basile in $16M crypto fraud tied to ‘insured’ token

The US Securities and Exchange Commission has filed a lawsuit against crypto executive Donald Basile, accusing him and two companies he controlled of raising about $16 million from investors through false claims tied to a so-called “insured” crypto token known as Bitcoin Latinum.

In a complaint filed Friday in the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York, the SEC alleged that Basile ran the scheme between March and December 2021 through Monsoon Blockchain Corp. and GIBF GP Inc., offering investors Simple Agreements for Future Tokens (SAFTs) that promised future delivery of the token, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal.

Regulators said hundreds of investors were told the asset was backed and insured, but the SEC alleged no insurance company ever provided coverage or any proof that these claims were true, per the report.

The case marks one of the few SEC enforcement actions under the Trump administration, which has signaled a more crypto-friendly regulatory stance compared to previous administrations.

Bitcoin Cracks 7-Month Ceiling. Can Bulls Push It Higher?



Bitcoin jumped 2.7%, breaking the descending resistance line that had capped every rally since October.

Myriad traders have flipped bullish, giving $BTC a 69% chance of hitting $84K next.

Traders, though, give a new Bitcoin all-time high only a 6.2% chance of happening before July.

Bitcoin is surging today on a geopolitical trigger few predicted: Iran today announced the Strait of Hormuz (or Strait of Iran, as President Donald Trump now calls it) will remain fully open during the ongoing ceasefire. It sent oil prices tumbling and risk assets surging in tandem.

Bitcoin climbed above $78,000 intraday on the news before pulling back slightly, while digital asset treasury stocks like Strategy surged more than 10% as $BTC's rise pushed its holdings back out of the red.


The macro environment had been brutal for most of 2026 with Middle East tensions, inflation fears, a strong dollar, and tight liquidity keeping Bitcoin locked in a grinding descent from its October 2025 peak of $126,000.

Bulls are praying that changes this week.

Bitcoin: Breaking the pattern, but not out of danger

Today's candlestick on the Bitcoin charts is significant. Bitcoin opened at $75,172 and traders pushed the daily candle up to $77,205—a 2.7% gain on the session, with an intraday high of $78,384.

That move, modest as it sounds, was key to solidifying the thesis that the descending resistance trendline that had been rejecting Bitcoin at every rally attempt since October 2025 has been, finally, invalidated. For seven months, that line was gravity. This has been the first week Bitcoin trades over that line since the bearish pattern began.

Ripple prepares to release almost $1.5 billion of XRP in less than 2 weeks

Ripple is set to unlock 1 billion XRP from its escrow contracts on May 1, continuing a monthly release program established in 2017.

At the time, the company placed 55 billion XRP into cryptographically secured escrow on the XRP Ledger to improve transparency and predictability around supply. 

Under this mechanism, 1 billion XRP becomes available at the start of each month. The structured approach was designed to address concerns about Ripple’s large holdings and to avoid sudden market shocks.

Now, the May release is another routine step in a schedule expected to run through at least 2027, as the escrowed balance gradually declines. 

With XRP currently trading at $1.47, the upcoming unlock carries a notional value of about $1.47 billion, though the actual figure will vary with price movements.

While closely watched for potential supply impact, historical patterns show that most of the unlocked XRP does not enter circulation immediately. 

In this line, Ripple typically re-locks 60% to 80% of the tokens into new escrow contracts. In recent months, including March and April 2026, about 700 million XRP were re-escrowed, leaving roughly 200 to 300 million XRP for operational use such as partnerships, liquidity provision, and ecosystem development.

This re-locking trend has helped limit net additions to circulating supply, meaning monthly unlocks have generally had minimal immediate market impact.

Bitcoin is now printing green candlesticks on the weekly and daily timeframes, and this raises the question of whether the worst has already passed or maybe the floor is still months away.

An interesting analysis of Bitcoin’s price action over a multi-year time span pushes back against the growing optimism, pointing to a pattern that has held for more than a decade and suggesting that time, not just price, may still be working against a confirmed bottom.

Every Bitcoin Bear Market Has Taken Over A Year To Bottom

Going back to 2013, Bitcoin’s bear market cycles have followed a consistent sequence when it comes to the one metric that matters most, which is time. Each Bitcoin bear cycle differed slightly in severity, but the time requirement it took for it to end was surprisingly consistent.

According to a technical chart noted by a crypto analyst that goes by the name Xremin, the bear market in 2024 stretched to around 426 days before a bottom formed. The 2017 cycle followed with roughly 363 days, while the bear market after 2021’s rally took about 376 days to complete.

The current cycle, however, is only about 190 days into its correction phase. This is, of course, taking Bitcoin’s peak above $126,000 in October 2025 as the starting point of the bear market correction. That places it at just over half the duration seen in previous cycles.

Bitcoin is already down about 43% from that all-time high. However, calling a bottom at this stage, according to the analyst, would mean assuming that Bitcoin has suddenly broken a 13-year pattern without any clear structural change to justify it.

This narrow waterway carries roughly 20% of the world’s crude oil supply, so any shift in its status immediately ripples through energy markets. Trump’s statement initially sparked optimism, hinting at a possible de-escalation of the conflict that began in late February. But that optimism didn’t last long.
Iran quickly pushed back. Lawmaker Mahmoud Nabavian rejected claims that the strait was “fully open,” adding that Iran would continue imposing tolls on commercial shipping — a stance echoed by state-aligned media. The conflicting narratives have only deepened uncertainty.
Confusion also surrounds the potential terms of a deal. Reports suggested the U.S. might offer Iran access to $20 billion in frozen assets in exchange for nuclear concessions, but Trump later denied this publicly. Analysts believe the mixed messaging may be a deliberate tactic to pressure Tehran into accelerating negotiations.
Talks are moving — but clarity is not

The real sticking point
At the heart of the negotiations lies control over the Strait of Hormuz — a geopolitical choke point with massive global implications. Gulf oil producers, along with major energy consumers in Asia and Europe, remain deeply concerned about any arrangement that could give Iran leverage over the passage.
