Institutions had ‘diamond hands’ during bitcoin's 50% plunge, Bitwise's Matt Hougan says

Institutional investors may be proving more resilient bitcoin holders than critics expected, according to Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan, who says ETF flow data suggests professional investors have largely held onto their positions during the crypto market’s steep decline.

“The best evidence we have is in the ETF market,” Hougan said. “Bitcoin ETFs accumulated roughly $60 billion in net flows from their launch in January 2024 through October 2025. Since October 2025, prices are down 50%, but we've seen less than $10 billion in outflows from ETFs.”

On the $THE market incident: here's what happened and what we're doing about it.

The attacker spent 9 months slowly accumulating $THE to build a dominant supply position. They then bypassed our supply cap by directly transferring tokens to the protocol contract. This is a gap in our code we are working to close.

From there, they ran a recursive loop: borrow assets → swap for $THE to pump the price → directly transfer $THE into vTHE to inflate the exchange rate → repeat. Each cycle generated excess borrowing power, sustaining the loop until liquidation. This created bad debt on the protocol.

Key points to note:
1⃣This was not a flash loan attack
2⃣Venus' oracles did not fail
3⃣Venus Flux is unaffected

We've paused the $THE market, set CF to zero, and applied precautionary measures to 8 other at-risk markets by setting their CF to zero as well.

Next: supply cap enforcement hardening, tighter collateral eligibility for low-liquidity assets, and price monitoring safeguards. Full post-mortem to follow.

Crypto investment products extended their recovery streak last week, with exchange-traded products recording $1.06 billion in net inflows for the third consecutive week, according to CoinShares data published Monday.

Etherfuse, a blockchain infrastructure company focused on tokenized bonds, has launched Etherfuse FX, a new platform for fast currency conversion between US dollars and Mexican pesos. The company says the system can reduce conversion costs by up to 90% for businesses that regularly move money between the United States and Mexico.

For Mexican peso exposure, the system uses tokenized CETES, short-term government treasury bonds issued by Mexico. According to the company, this structure is designed to provide the type of asset backing familiar to institutional finance while improving transaction speed and efficiency.

The solution is aimed at companies that frequently work with multiple currencies. This includes remittance services, payment processors, B2B software providers, and import-export businesses operating between the US and Mexico.

Businesses can connect to Etherfuse FX through standard APIs that integrate with existing payment and accounting systems. The company says most integrations can be completed within two to three weeks.

Bitcoin Price Roars Above $74,000 as Market Sentiment Improves

The price of Bitcoin pushed above $74,000 early Monday, as easing geopolitical tensions and improving risk sentiment helped lift the broader crypto market.

The move capped one of bitcoin’s strongest weekly performances since the outbreak of the Iran–Israel War in late February.

The rally coincided with signs of de-escalation in the Middle East. Two commercial tankers transited the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday for the first time since the conflict began, after Iran indicated its shipping restrictions would apply only to vessels linked to its adversaries.

At the same time, Donald Trump said the United States was in talks with Tehran, helping calm energy markets. Oil prices retreated from recent highs, the U.S. dollar weakened and equity futures turned positive, signaling a broader shift toward risk assets.

The move higher also triggered a wave of short liquidations in crypto derivatives markets. Roughly $344 million in positions were wiped out over the past 24 hours, with bearish traders accounting for more than 80% of the total, according to Bitcoin Magazine Pro data.

Market participants are now watching whether the bitcoin price can hold momentum above the $74,000 region.

A sustained break could open the door to a move toward $80,000, a level that previously served as support late last year before prices slid during the early-2026 correction.
