The Coinbase Bitcoin premium index turned positive on Aug. 24 for the first time in 98 days, according to data from CoinGlass, offering a potential early signal that U.S. investor appetite for $BTC may be recovering after a prolonged slump.

The index tracks the price difference between Bitcoin on Coinbase, a major U.S.-based exchange, and global platforms. A positive premium suggests that buyers on Coinbase are willing to pay more than the global average, often interpreted as stronger demand from U.S. institutional and retail participants. Conversely, a sustained negative premium indicates weaker buying pressure in the U.S. market relative to other regions.

According to CoinGlass, the index had been negative for 97 consecutive days starting May 19, marking the longest such streak on record. The brief flip to +0.0032% on Aug. 24 was notable, though it slipped back to -0.0141% the following day, indicating that the shift may be tentative rather than a definitive trend reversal.

Cryptocurrency Exchange Trading Volume Doubled in Five Days! Will the Recovery Continue? Here Are the DetailsWith the resurgence of trading activity in the cryptocurrency markets, trading volumes on centralized exchanges have increased significantly in a short period. Daily trading volume, which doubled in five days last week, has recovered from its annual lows and surpassed $37 billion. However, despite this increase, volume remains well below the 12-month peak of $105 billion seen after the large liquidations on October 10th.

Total trading volume in August also reflects the recovery in market activity. According to the data, approximately $490 billion worth of transactions took place on centralized exchanges in the first part of the month. In July, this figure was $670 billion.

Analysts point out that in the current cycle, spot CEX volumes are having to compete with spot crypto ETFs, unlike in previous periods. While in the past, a large portion of investor demand was met directly through centralized exchanges, with the proliferation of ETF products, some of the capital for major assets like Bitcoin and Ethereum is shifting towards traditional financial channels.

It is noted that the proliferation of crypto ETFs and digital asset treasury companies (DATs) could put long-term pressure on centralized exchange volumes. Conversely, demand in the altcoin market is expected to remain largely on CEX platforms. Fast listing, a wide range of trading pairs, and advanced trading tools for small market cap tokens are among the advantages that ETF and DAT structures cannot easily offer.

Coinbase-backed advocacy group backs 32 candidates
Separately, Coinbase-backed advocacy group Stand With Crypto (SWC) has endorsed an additional 32 candidates ahead of the November midterm elections. The candidates are pro-crypto across the Republican and Democratic parties.

In March, the group backed six other legislators and plans to endorse more towards Election Day in November. Collectively, crypto-aligned PACs, including Fairshake, have committed $324M for elections. So far, Republicans have received more backing from the sector.
