A positive premium suggests that buyers on Coinbase are willing to pay more than the global average, often interpreted as stronger demand from U.S. institutional and retail participants. Conversely, a sustained negative premium indicates weaker buying pressure in the U.S. market relative to other regions.

According to CoinGlass, the index had been negative for 97 consecutive days starting May 19, marking the longest such streak on record. The brief flip to +0.0032% on Aug. 24 was notable, though it slipped back to -0.0141% the following day, indicating that the shift may be tentative rather than a definitive trend reversal.

The extended negative streak aligns with a period of subdued U.S. crypto trading activity, which some analysts attribute to regulatory uncertainty, seasonal liquidity patterns, and a broader risk-off sentiment among institutional investors. While the single-day positive reading is not conclusive, it adds to a growing set of on-chain and exchange flow metrics that traders watch for early signs of demand rotation.

It is important to note that the premium index is a narrow measure and can be influenced by factors such as arbitrage activity, exchange-specific liquidity, and timing of large trades. A single day’s reading does not confirm a sustained shift, but the end of a record-long negative streak could warrant closer observation in the coming weeks.

The Bitcoin (BTC) crash this year forced billionaire entrepreneur Michael Saylor‘s Strategy (Nasdaq: MSTR), formerly MicroStrategy, to sell its Bitcoin stack multiple times.

The company had been sitting on an unrealized loss on its Bitcoin holdings for several months this year. When the cryptocurrency crashed as low as $58,300 on June 30, the paper loss soared to approximately $13 billion—worth 20% of its total Bitcoin cost basis.

However, Bitcoin rose above $79,000 on Aug. 21 due to factors such as the Treasury’s decision to at least double the amount of its longer-dated government debt buybacks, President Donald Trump’s pro-crypto declarations, and the subsequent short squeeze.

Thanks to the Bitcoin rally, Strategy is no longer underwater on its holdings.

Right now, it holds 840,447 BTC which it acquired at an average price of $75,385. As Bitcoin is currently trading at $77,145, Strategy is no longer underwater on its holdings.

In fact, the company has approximately $1.48 billion in unrealized profit on its BTC holdings.

The MSTR stock hit the intraday high of $121.90 on Aug. 21, the highest level since June 11 when it reached as high as $121.10.

Nonetheless, Strategy remains the world’s largest Bitcoin treasury company.

Arbitrum is also moving deeper into the real-world asset market, with tokenized U.S. stocks coming to its network. Recently, Arbitrum One has climbed to #2 in perpetuals, recording $1.48B in volume and $1.834B in open interest.

The development gives users access to blockchain-based versions of traditional equities. The assets are designed around 1:1 backing and on-chain settlement.

The U.S. is targeting the Iranian regime’s continued use of digital assets to sidestep traditional sanctions, including these tools as a top priority in its economic onslaught plan to cripple Iran’s economy.

On Monday, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent launched Operation Economic Outcast, defined as “an unprecedented, whole-of-government, economic campaign against the Islamic Republic of Iran and its enablers.” The campaign seeks to sever the economic lifelines of the Iranian regime in several key fields, targeting nations and individuals doing business with the Iranian government.

“Any entity that facilitates money laundering or sanctions evasion on behalf of Iran risks being cut off from the U.S. financial system,” the Treasury stated, explaining that the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) can now “sanction any person, regardless of where they are located,” operating in several sectors in the Iranian economy, including digital assets.

As part of the first wave of actions, the Treasury is sanctioning a cyber group of Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) that has perpetrated crypto heists. Mojtaba Ghal’eh-Kuhi, Behzad Mesri, Keyvan Fayyaz Ghareh Blagh, Saber Shahbazi Balujeh, Mohammad Reza Kadkhoda’i, and Arman Kahzadian are all mentioned as threat actors that have targeted U.S. institutions and companies and even executed digital asset heists.
