Bitcoin Mining Hits a Crossroads as Difficulty Hovers Near the FloorBitcoin Miners Keep Losing Ground
Bitcoin mining is now 1.31% easier than it was the day before, and the full-year scorecard shows miners have spent more time losing ground than gaining it. From the first adjustment of 2026 through the latest at block 963648, Bitcoin has recorded ten downward difficulty adjustments against just seven increases.Bitcoin’s last two difficulty adjustments logged by mempool.space.
More importantly, the losses have repeatedly dwarfed the rebounds that followed. Difficulty entered 2026 near 148.25 trillion before the Jan. 8 adjustment and now sits at 125.81 trillion, leaving Bitcoin’s mining difficulty roughly 15.1% below the level immediately before the year’s first adjustment. The real tell is where Bitcoin’s difficulty landed after all that whiplash.

Nearly Every Difficulty Comeback Has Been Erased
Difficulty cratered to 124.93 trillion on June 13, the lowest reading in 2026. It clawed back to 133.87 trillion, fell to 127.17 trillion, slipped again to 126.23 trillion, bounced to 127.48 trillion and has now retreated to 125.81 trillion. That leaves today’s difficulty barely 0.7% above the 2026 low. Put differently, almost every meaningful comeback miners managed since June has been wiped off the board.

Roughly 150 EH/s of Mining Power Disappears
The latest difficulty adjustment is especially telling because it followed a razor-thin 0.99% increase at block 961632. Instead of igniting another recovery cycle, that small gain was immediately wiped out by the 1.31% decline at block 963648. Hashrate is already well off its all-time high, and the difficulty data points to roughly 150 exahash per second (EH/s) of effective mining power disappearing from the network.

Term Finance loses estimated $8.5M in vault governance exploit
Decentralized lending protocol Term Finance lost an estimated $8.5 million after an attacker exploited governance control of its strategy vaults, according to blockchain security firms.

On Sunday, PeckShield said the attacker drained about 2,843 Ether ($ETH), valued at $6.87 million at the time, and 1.68 million USDC, which was exchanged for approximately 1.68 million Dai (DAI). CertiK made a similar estimate, placing the total loss at around $8.5 million.

The reported loss represented about 68% of the $12.45 million held in Term’s vault product before the attack, including nearly all of its approximately $8.8 million in Ethereum deposits, according to Defillama data.

Term Labs said it had irreversibly shut down all Term Meta Vaults and revoked their DAO governance roles, permanently preventing further deposits while keeping withdrawals open. Based on its investigation so far, the company said the underlying Term protocol and its direct borrowing and lending markets were unaffected, though it was still verifying the scope.

Cointelegraph was unable to reach Term Labs for comment. The company does not list a public press contact, and its direct messages on X were closed.

Attacker allegedly took control through governance

Onchain monitoring service Defimon said the attacker cheaply acquired a majority of a sparsely held governance token and passed proposals that allowed it to seize control of Term’s vaults. Term has not confirmed how the attacker obtained voting control or which governance functions were used.

The vault contracts use Yearn V3 infrastructure. However, Yearn said the attack involved a custom governance wrapper and the attack vector does not apply to standard Yearn vault setups.

Term said it was coordinating with external security teams on asset recovery and remediation. It said it would “explore paths to address” any remaining shortfall.

Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse used a speech at the CFTC’s Innovation Advisory Committee meeting this week to make the case for passing the Clarity Act, pointing to his company’s own multi-year legal fight with the SEC as evidence of the cost uncertain regulation imposes on the industry.

Peter Schiff Says AI Could Turn Into Bitcoin's Biggest ThreatThe gold advocate and longtime $BTC critic made the argument Sunday afternoon, saying bitcoin supporters are attempting to connect the cryptocurrency with the booming AI investment trade when the technologies may actually be competitors.

“Bitcoin pumpers are trying to hitch Bitcoin to the AI wagon, hoping investors will see it as part of the AI trade. They have it backwards. AI isn’t bullish for Bitcoin; it’s a threat to it,” Schiff wrote on the social media platform X.

The economist added:

“AI competes with Bitcoin for speculative capital, electricity, and>Bitcoin miners have already felt that pressure. Some mining companies have begun converting portions of their infrastructure to support AI and high-performance computing (HPC) because those businesses can offer another source of revenue.

That development, however, does not necessarily threaten the Bitcoin network itself. It creates competition for bitcoin mining companies, which must decide whether using available electricity for mining or AI computing produces better returns.

Bitcoin was designed to adjust when mining participation changes. Roughly every 2,016 blocks, the network changes its mining difficulty to keep blocks arriving around once every ten minutes. If substantial computing power leaves Bitcoin, mining eventually becomes easier for the remaining participants.

$BTC supporters and Schiff critics quickly piled into the economist’s X thread. “AI is a threat to gold more than it is to Bitcoin, Peter,” one account fired back. Schiff, apparently unconvinced, responded, “How so?” The user then laid out the counterargument:
