WisdomTree exec says tokenization could do to ETFs what ETFs did to mutual funds

ETFs held about $300 billion worldwide when WisdomTree decided they were a product worth focusing on roughly 20 years ago. That number is now over $13 trillion in the U.S. alone.

WisdomTree's head of digital assets, Will Peck, says the firm is betting that tokenization on public blockchains could be the next structural shift of that magnitude.

"We asked ourselves the question: what could do to ETFs what ETFs did to mutual funds?" Peck said on TheStreet Roundtable. "We saw tokenization on public blockchains as playing a really big role in that."

What is WisdomTree actually building?

WisdomTree's approach goes beyond simply putting an existing fund wrapper on a blockchain. They want to be the regulated bridge between traditional assets that exist off-chain and the tokens that represent them on-chain.

The reality of tokenized real-world assets (RWAs) is that there is always a physical or financial asset sitting somewhere off the blockchain. A legal structure has to bind that asset to its on-chain representation.

WisdomTree wants to be the entity investors trust to hold that together.

"When you're talking about tokenized real-world assets, there's an asset that exists somewhere off-chain that you're representing in a token on-chain, and there needs to be some sort of legal construct binding those things together," Peck said. "We want to be the right kind of legal, regulated entity to enable that."

Why crypto-natives should care

The interesting move is who WisdomTree is building for. Not just TradFi allocators looking for blockchain efficiency. Peck said the firm wants to serve the self-custody, DeFi-native crowd directly.

The FCA raided 8 premises on April 22, 2026, issuing cease and desist letters in the UK’s first P2P crypto crackdown.

SWROCU’s DI Ross Flay cited money laundering risk, with evidence from the raids supporting multiple criminal investigations.

The FCA’s Firm Checker tool remains the primary resource for consumers as enforcement of crypto AML rules intensifies in 2026.

The FCA conducted the inspections alongside HM Revenue and Customs and the South West Regional Organised Crime Unit. At each site, agents issued cease and desist letters ordering traders to halt operations immediately.Peer-to-peer crypto trading involves individuals buying and selling digital assets directly with one another, bypassing a centralized exchange. Under U.K. law, that activity requires FCA registration. Currently, no registered peer-to-peer crypto traders or platforms operate legally in the country.

Evidence gathered during the inspections is now feeding into multiple ongoing criminal investigations.

Steve Smart, executive director of enforcement and market oversight at the FCA, said unregistered peer-to-peer traders are operating illegally and creating financial crime risks. “We will use our powers and work with partners to disrupt them,” Smart stated.

Detective Inspector Ross Flay of SWROCU pointed to money laundering as a central concern. Flay said the goal is to stop illegal traders from giving criminals a route to move, hide, and spend illicit funds.

The action was taken under the Money Laundering, Terrorist Financing and Transfer of Funds Regulations 2017, the primary legal framework governing anti-money laundering compliance for crypto firms in the United Kingdom.

The market capitalization of tokenized real-world assets ( RWA) has grown nearly 20-fold over the past three years, surpassing $29 billion as institutional adoption accelerates across private credit, government debt, and commodities.

GoPlus Security и ExVul подтвердили взлом привилегированного ключа оператора, а не ошибку в проверенных смарт-контрактах Volo.

Volo заблокировал попытку злоумышленника создать мост на 19,6 WBTC и компенсирует все потери, а хранилища заморожены до проведения анализа причин сбоя.

В результате атаки были выведены средства из трех хранилищ, содержащих обернутые биткоины (WBTC), токенизированный золотой актив XAUm из Matrixdock и USDC.
