HIP-3 open interest tops $2 billion as demand for 24/7 tokenized equity exposure surges

On Hyperliquid, just three of the top 10 markets by volume are crypto pairs, while the rest are tokenized equity or commodity futures.

The following is excerpted from The Block's Data and Insights newsletter.

Open interest (OI) on Hyperliquid's HIP-3 markets hit a record high of $2.38 billion last week. As of Wednesday, Ol sits at slightly under $2.1 billion, still near its highs despite a 12% pullback likely tied to broader risk-off moves.

HIP-3's growth trajectory has been staggering, from just around $280 million in Ol at the beginning of the year to crossing $1 billion less than a month later and $2 billion by the end of the quarter. Year-to-date, HIP-3 Ol is up approximately 580%. TradeXYZ alone accounts for over 90% of all HIP-3 ΟΙ.

On the Hyperliquid platform itself, only three of the top 10 markets by volume are crypto pairs. The rest are tokenized equity and commodity futures such as Nasdaq proxies, oil, gold, silver, and the S&P 500.

China already has the compute to train its own Mythos-like AI: Nvidia CEO

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has warned that China already has the computing power and data center capacity necessary to train an AI model at the same level as Anthropic’s AI model Claude Mythos, which could threaten global cybersecurity.

Huang was asked in an interview on the Dwarkesh Patel podcast on Wednesday whether the Chinese government’s access to chips to train a model like Claude Mythos — which has cyberoffensive capabilities — could be a threat to US national security.

Mythos was trained on a “fairly mundane capacity,” Huang said.

Institutional interest is also returning. US-listed Ether spot ETFs have recorded $248 million in inflows over the past 10 days, while Bitmine Immersion has significantly expanded its holdings, now controlling millions of ETH worth billions of dollars. This indicates that large players are still confident in Ethereum’s long-term potential.

However, not all indicators are bullish. Funding rates for ETH futures remain weak and have even dipped into negative territory multiple times, showing that many traders are still betting against the rally. This reflects a level of skepticism despite the recent price recovery.

Another concern is declining activity on the Ethereum network. Revenue from decentralized applications has dropped sharply, and competition from newer blockchains is increasing. These factors are raising questions about whether Ethereum can sustain strong growth in the future.

Overall, while institutional accumulation and spot demand are supporting ETH’s recovery, mixed signals from derivatives markets and weak network activity suggest that the rally may face challenges ahead.

Bloomberg ETF analyst James Seyffart called the fund's $400,000 worth of volume in the first 90 minutes of trading "pretty damn good."

Bitwise Asset Management, which has $11 billion under management, launched a new Avalanche exchange-traded fund on Wednesday.

The firm intends to stake the AVAX held, according to a statement.
