Deep Tide Introduction: On April 18th, Kelp DAO suffered a $292 million theft, the largest DeFi incident so far in 2026. The vulnerability wasn't in the contract code, but in the 1-of-1 validator node configuration of the LayerZero cross-chain bridge—a single point of failure could lead to the forgery of cross-chain messages. The author had already flagged this risk point 12 days prior when scanning Kelp with his self-developed open-source AI auditing tool. This article recounts the entire attack process and honestly reflects on three things the tool failed to do at the time.


What is Kelp DAO?

Kelp DAO is a liquidity restaking protocol built on top of EigenLayer.  The mechanism works like this: users deposit ETH or liquid staking tokens (stETH, ETHx) into a Kelp contract, which then delegates the assets to EigenLayer's operating nodes for restaking—simultaneously providing security for multiple AVS (Actively Validated Services). In return, users receive rsETH as collateral. Unlike direct restaking on EigenLayer (where assets are locked), rsETH is liquid—it can be traded, used as collateral in lending protocols like Aave, and cross-chain.

To achieve this cross-chain liquidity, Kelp deploys rsETH on more than 16 chains using LayerZero's OFT (Omnichain Fungible Token) standard. When you cross rsETH from Ethereum to an L2 chain, LayerZero's DVN (Decentralized Verifier Network) verifies the legitimacy of this cross-chain message. This bridge architecture is the core of the story that follows.

 Kelp, founded by Amitej Gajjala and Dheeraj Borra (former co-founders of Stader Labs), launched in December 2023. Its peak TVL reached $2.09 billion. Governance uses a 6/8 multi-signature mechanism with a 10-day contract upgrade time lock. The governance token KERNEL governs Kelp, Kernel, and Gain product lines.

The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz on Friday sparked a general risk appetite in the markets: US stocks surged, oil prices plummeted, US Treasury yields fell, and the market believed the worst was over and global energy supply disruptions had eased.

However, these moves may prove premature.

At 9:20 a.m. on Saturday, the calm was first broken by reports that two oil tankers were denied passage in the Strait of Hormuz. Trump then publicly pressured the US to continue its blockade of Iranian ports if no agreement was reached by Wednesday. At 4 p.m. that day, Iran announced the reimposition of restrictions on the strait and opened fire on ships attempting to pass—two Indian vessels turned back to the Persian Gulf after being shelled, bringing shipping in the strait to a near standstill.

Traders reacted quickly on TradeXYZ, with crude oil contracts rising approximately 4.52% from the weekend close, while S&P 500 contracts fell nearly 0.8%.

 Trump then shifted his stance, revealing that Special Envoy Steve Witkoff would travel to Pakistan on Tuesday to meet with Iranian officials, potentially extending the negotiation window to Wednesday.

Following this, Trump posted on Truth Social, stating, "The deal we've offered is very fair and reasonable, and I hope they accept it because if they don't, the United States will destroy every power plant and every bridge in Iran."

Iran clearly didn't buy it. At 1:53 AM on the 20th, Iran announced its refusal to participate in the second round of negotiations; according to Axios, Tehran judged that the US might launch an attack before the ceasefire expired on Tuesday night.


Affected by this news, crude oil prices surged again, erasing the highs of the 18th, while the S&P 500 index fell below the lows of the 18th.

Meanwhile, Strategy made an even larger headline move, deploying approximately $2.54 billion to acquire 34,164 BTC at an average price of around $74,395. This represents the company’s most substantial Bitcoin accumulation since November 2024, reinforcing its long-term conviction in BTC despite price volatility.
Historically, Strategy’s last comparable accumulation occurred in early August 2025, when it invested about $2.46 billion between July 28 and August 3 to purchase 21,021 BTC at an average cost of $117,256.
The latest wave of buying suggests that large players are once again actively positioning during market uncertainty rather than waiting for clear trend confirmation. While such activity is often interpreted as a long-term bullish signal, short-term price action can still remain volatile depending on broader macro conditions and liquidity cycles.
Overall, the data points to a familiar pattern in crypto cycles: when volatility rises, long-term institutions often scale exposure—quietly accumulating during periods of uncertainty.
