Bitcoin surged on April 17 after the US President Donald Trump said the Strait of Hormuz was open again and shipping passage was being restored.
In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote that Iran had announced the strait was “fully open and ready for full passage.” He added that sea mines had been removed, or were being removed, with the help of the United States.
Earlier today, Trump posted again that Chinese President Xi Jinping was “very happy” that the Strait of Hormuz was open or rapidly opening. He also said that a meeting coming up in China could be historic.

The market reacted fast as Bitcoin jumped to a 10-week high above $78,000, reaching around $78,400 for the first time since February 4.

The crypto market experienced a sharp wave of liquidations as Bitcoin surged above $78,000, reaching a fresh 10-week high. This strong upward move came as global market sentiment improved, with easing geopolitical tensions encouraging investors to take on more risk across both crypto and traditional markets.

As Bitcoin broke above its recent range, a large number of leveraged positions were wiped out. In total, around $820 million was liquidated from the crypto futures market within 24 hours. The majority of these were short positions, with over $660 million liquidated, including approximately $353 million in Bitcoin shorts and $160 million in Ether shorts. This indicates that many traders were positioned against the rally and were forced to exit as prices moved higher.

One of the largest single liquidations occurred on a major trading platform, where a BTC-USDT short position worth over $15 million was closed. Such large liquidations often accelerate price movements, as forced buying from short sellers adds further upward pressure to the market.

At the same time, Bitcoin’s futures open interest increased by around 13%, signaling growing participation and rising leverage in the market. While open interest includes both long and short positions, the current trend suggests that bullish momentum is gaining strength as more traders enter the market.

Liquidity data also showed that sell orders in the $77,500 to $78,000 range were absorbed as Bitcoin continued its upward move. This absorption of supply indicates strong buying demand, allowing the price to push higher without significant resistance.

Bitcoin investors are suddenly confronting an uncomfortable math problem inside the $91.7 billion U.S. spot bitcoin ETF market.

"Coinbase Custody holds 84% of all US spot Bitcoin ETF assets," Marc Baumann, founder of research firm fiftyonexyz, posted on X on April 14. "That's $77 billion with a single custodian. For an industry built on decentralization, the most important product category has a single point of failure. Regulators will notice."

The warning is landing as bitcoin trades near $77,000, having clawed back from a 40% drawdown since its late-2025 peak around $126,000. It also lands three weeks after the April 2 conditional approval of a national trust charter for Coinbase by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. "OCC grants Coinbase conditional approval for a National Trust Bank Charter," Swiss law firm Goldblum & Partners posted on X on April 13, noting that "11 crypto firms now in the federal banking pipeline" and that a new rule, 12 CFR 5.20, "explicitly permits non-fiduciary crypto custody for national trust banks." That regulatory blessing, in a twist, deepens the concentration analysts are now calling out.

The figure itself has become the new rallying cry of bitcoin's structural skeptics. CryptoSlate first framed the dollar number on April 12 as "over 80% of Bitcoin ETF assets hit Coinbase custody choke point with $74B at risk." Within 48 hours, the phrasing was circulating through crypto-media accounts and analyst threads.

"Over 80% of Bitcoin ETF assets now sit inside Coinbase custody. That’s roughly $74B concentrated in one infrastructure layer," wrote crypto-media account W3BCMedia on April 13. Institutional adoption was growing, the account added, "but so is systemic custody risk."
