Tough sell’ – Bloomberg analyst casts doubt on Charles Schwab’s crypto push

$12 trillion brokerage and commercial bank Charles Schwab has launched a phased roll-out for its Spot crypto trading division.

Dubbed Schwab Crypto, the platform will be live in the upcoming weeks and will offer direct access for retail investors to trade Bitcoin and Ethereum. 

Only the two top crypto assets will be supported for now. Other crypto assets will be added over time.

The platform will allow users to view both their crypto assets and traditional assets, including stock and ETF holdings. The launch comes after recent speculation that the firm was planning a major move into spot crypto support. 

Commenting on the debut, Joe Vietri, head of digital assets at Charles Schwab, said the move was aimed at helping retail investors diversify their portfolio.

According to data from crypto.news, Morpho (MORPHO) price climbed more than 12% to an intraday high of $1.94 on Friday before easing slightly to $1.93 at press time, marking its strongest level so far this year. There are four key reasons behind the latest move. First, Morpho's integration with Fireblocks has unlocked a fresh stream of institutional capital. The company rolled out its Earn product on April 15, giving over 2,400 clients the ability to allocate idle stablecoins into Morpho vaults. Given that Fireblocks processes more than $200 billion in monthly stablecoin volume, the tie-up creates a meaningful channel for liquidity to flow into the protocol. Second, Morpho has widened its offering with the launch of Morpho Midnight, a lending system built around fixed rates and fixed durations. The product is geared toward traditional finance players who rely on predictable returns, which could help Morpho gain traction as backend infrastructure for credit markets. The onboarding of Unified Labs as a risk curator for tokenized asset vaults signals its push into Asian markets.

French authorities are stepping up efforts to protect cryptocurrency investors amid a sharp increase in violent, targeted attacks.

Speaking at Paris Blockchain Week, Jean-Didier Berger, minister delegate to the interior minister of France, said the government has already introduced preventive steps. Specifically, these include a dedicated platform to reduce so-called “wrench attacks,” in which criminals use force to access digital assets.

The initiative is already seeing strong uptake, with thousands of users reportedly signing up. Berger also confirmed ongoing coordination with Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez on a broader national security strategy, which is expected to be developed in the coming weeks.

The urgency behind these measures is reflected in recent figures. French outlet RTL reported 41 crypto-related kidnappings so far in 2026. This suggests an incident roughly every two and a half days.

Beyond France, the trend appears global. Cybersecurity firm CertiK recorded 72 verified wrench attacks in 2025, a 75% year-on-year increase. France led with 19 cases, while Europe accounted for about 40% of all incidents.

Russia introduces bill to criminalize unregistered crypto services

Russia’s government submitted a bill to its parliament’s lower house in an effort to amend the country's legal code to attach criminal liability for crypto services offered without regulatory approval or licensing.

In a draft law sent to the State Duma on Friday, Russian lawmakers proposed that entities "carrying out activities related to the organization of digital currency circulation,” that operate without a license from Russia’s central bank, could be subject to criminal liability.

Without registration with the Bank of Russia, individuals could face up to $4,000 in fines and up to four years in prison, or more severe penalties if part of an organized group.
The same act committed by an organized group, or involving the infliction of damage or the extraction of income on a particularly large scale, would be punishable by compulsory labor for up to five years or imprisonment for up to seven years,” the bill’s text said.

The bill also proposes a “fine of up to 1 million rubles [$13,100] or an amount equal to the convicted person’s salary or other income for a period of up to five years.”

The draft law followed a package of bills initially proposed in March that included criminal penalties for illegal crypto miners, but the most recent legislation included details on fines and potential prison time for any unregistered digital asset services.

According to Russian media outlet RBC, the country’s Supreme Court said that the crypto bill lacks “reasoned justification” for criminal penalties.

The court said that the measure was “premature” until Russia enacted its “Digital Currency and Digital Rights law,” expected to go into effect in July. If the bill passes it would give Russia’s government more control and oversight over the crypto industry.

The warning is landing as bitcoin trades near $77,000, having clawed back from a 40% drawdown since its late-2025 peak around $126,000. It also lands three weeks after the April 2 conditional approval of a national trust charter for Coinbase by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. "OCC grants Coinbase conditional approval for a National Trust Bank Charter," Swiss law firm Goldblum & Partners posted on X on April 13, noting that "11 crypto firms now in the federal banking pipeline" and that a new rule, 12 CFR 5.20, "explicitly permits non-fiduciary crypto custody for national trust banks." That regulatory blessing, in a twist, deepens the concentration analysts are now calling out.
