Bitcoin Bitcoin, Ethereum Ethereum, and the broader cryptocurrency market declined on Sunday after U.S. and Iranian negotiators failed to reach a peace agreement.
Bitcoin dropped around 2.6% in the past 24 hours, trading near $71,093 and briefly touching lows of about $70,600. Ethereum fell roughly 3.6%, while XRP and Solana also declined by 2% and 3.25% respectively. The GMCI 30 index, which tracks the top 30 crypto assets, slipped around 2.5%.
The market reaction followed the collapse of extended talks in Islamabad, which reportedly lasted more than 20 hours. U.S. officials said Iranian representatives refused to accept proposed terms, while Iranian state media blamed “unreasonable demands” from Washington.
Earlier optimism around a potential ceasefire had briefly supported risk assets, but sentiment quickly reversed as negotiations failed to progress. Investors remain cautious, with uncertainty still high over whether a broader diplomatic breakthrough is possible.
Adding further pressure, geopolitical tensions escalated after reports that the U.S. increased naval pressure around the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route, raising fears of further regional instability.
Despite the short-term selloff, some analysts say the underlying institutional trend in crypto remains intact, with macro-driven volatility continuing to dominate price action.

"It's crazy": Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Chairman Selig grilled by lawmakers over prediction markets, Hyperliquid, and staffing

CFTC Chairman Michael Selig was questioned about Hyperliquid, prediction markets, and whether his agency has enough staff to regulate these new areas.

The top Democrat on the committee, Representative Angie Craig, expressed concern about the agency's ability to oversee prediction markets, given that it may lack enforcement staff.
Commodity Futures Trading Commission Chairman Michael Selig has been criticized by lawmakers over how he plans to regulate prediction markets, given the agency's assertive assertion of jurisdiction over them, and whether the CFTC has enough staff to do so.

 On Thursday, during a hearing of the House Agriculture Committee, which oversees the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), lawmakers questioned Selig about prediction markets, which have recently come under scrutiny after contracts were created allowing people to bet on events such as the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with one trade reportedly netting nearly half a million dollars.

"That's crazy," said Rep. Jim Costa, a California Democrat, during the hearing. "Do you think that's what was intended?"

Selig said the CFTC has broad legislation, adding that the agency received advance notice of the proposed rule change to figure out how to "address the problem of these new markets."

"I don't think that's a satisfactory answer," Costa said.  "I don't believe this is market innovation—it's profiting from tragedy, and I think we need to take a closer look at where this is all leading."
