Strategy MSTR$123.69·At close is back in profit on its bitcoin $BTC$75,582.18 holdings, with an unrealized gain of roughly $1.4 billion, or 2.4%, as the largest cryptocurrency added almost 22% in five straight days of advances .

The company owns 840,447 $BTC, acquired at an average price of $75,385, compared with bitcoin’s current price of about $77,000.

Strategy had been sitting on an unrealized loss for much of the year as the price of the largest cryptocurrency fell roughly 54% from its October all-time high of $126,000. The company’s common stock rose 10% in Friday pre-market trading to $120, its highest level in two months.

Bitcoin traded in the low to mid-$60,000s for much of the past few months, a period during which Strategy sold around 6,916 $BTC. The company has also increased its U.S. dollar reserve to $4.8 billion, providing 2.8 years of coverage for dividend payments and other obligations.

When bitcoin traded as low as $58,000 back in July, that unrealized loss was about $13 billion, equivalent to 20.4% of the company’s total bitcoin cost basis.

A key priority has been restoring the company’s perpetual preferred stock, STRC, to its $100 par value. Strategy has repurchased roughly $347 million of STRC over the past four weeks, deploying more than a third of its $1 billion buyback authorization, with purchases accelerating each week. STRC is currently trading at $95.62, up roughly 35% from its June low of $71.

Another potential tailwind for STRC is the recovery in the broader digital credit market. SATA, the perpetual preferred security issued by Strive Asset Management (ASST), briefly returned to its $100 par value on Thursday for the first time in two months.

Most people who lost money in DeFi this spring didn’t lose it because someone hacked a smart contract. They lost it because a story they’d been sold about yield finally stopped working.

The numbers were hard to ignore. In April, the Kelp DAO bridge was drained for $292 million. Within 48 hours, DeFi had lost $13 billion in total value locked (TVL). Aave alone lost $8.45 billion.  Two weeks before that, Drift on Solana got hit for $285 million.

Most of the coverage treated these as contagion events, which they were. But contagion describes how losses spread, not why some positions were exposed, and others weren’t. That question has a more useful answer, and it starts with how the industry talks about yield: as a product, something you market, package and sell like a phone plan, then stack against your competitor's number and let users sort by size. That framing makes yield easy to compare. It also strips out almost everything that determines whether a given yield holds up.

On any exchange interface, yield arrives as a figure on a list: 8%, 24%, whatever the next protocol needs to advertise. The figure is usually accurate and close to uninformative. Behind it sits a system: where capital is deployed, how risk is priced, what happens at redemption, who holds custody, which regulatory perimeter applies and what the underlying assets are.

South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Upbit will add Bitcoin and Tether trading pairs for Biconomy, Bubblemaps, Nillion and ETHGas on Aug. 21.

The exchange originally scheduled the eight markets to open at 13:00 Korea Standard Time. Upbit updated its official notice at 12:50 KST and postponed trading until 16:00 KST, a three hour delay.

Upbit did not give a detailed reason for the change. It apologized for the inconvenience and retained the previously announced deposit networks and initial order restrictions.

The exchange warned that trading could face another delay if deposits and withdrawals fail to establish sufficient liquidity before the revised opening time.

Each of the four tokens will receive one $BTC pair and one $USDT pair. Upbit did not announce Korean won markets for the assets.

BICO, NIL and $GWEI deposits must use Ethereum. BMT deposits must use Solana. Upbit will not process transfers made through unsupported networks, even when another version of the same token exists elsewhere.

The exchange provided contract addresses for each supported asset. Users should verify those addresses and the selected blockchain before transferring funds. Deposits sent through the wrong network may require a lengthy recovery process or may not be recoverable.

Upbit can also request evidence explaining the source of large deposits. Transfers from exchanges that do not meet its Travel Rule requirements may not appear in customer accounts until additional checks are completed.

The exchange has expanded its non won markets through several recent listing rounds. As crypto.news previously reported, Upbit added nine tokens across its $BTC and $USDT markets in June.

Grayscale Investments has withdrawn the registration statements for three proposed single-asset exchange-traded funds tied to Cardano’s $ADA, Polkadot’s $DOT and Hedera’s $HBAR. The asset manager submitted three Form RW requests to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Aug. 7, telling the regulator it “does not intend to proceed with the planned distribution” of the trusts’ shares, according to the SEC filing.
The withdrawals were sponsor-initiated under Rule 477 of the Securities Act of 1933, not the result of a formal SEC rejection. Grayscale said no securities had been issued or sold under the registrations, which had not yet become effective.
Sponsor-initiated, not a rejection
Because Grayscale chose to pull the filings before the SEC reached a decision, the move signals a change in the firm’s product priorities rather than a regulatory defeat. Grayscale gave no detailed explanation in the filings, which simply stated that the sponsor no longer intends to proceed.
The S-1 registration statements had been filed in late August and early September 2025 amid a broad wave of altcoin ETF applications. All three underlying tokens have fallen sharply since then, with $DOT down the most on a year-to-date basis.

Bitcoin, ether and solana climb as another $1 billion shorts get wiped out
Bitcoin rose to just under $75,000 in Asian morning hours on Friday, up almost 8% on the day and nearly 18% over the week, after touching just above $75,500 overnight. Two days ago it traded near $64,100.

Short sellers took another beating, as roughly $1 billion of short positions were liquidated over 24 hours out of $1.23 billion in total, across 140,416 traders, per CoinGlass.

That follows the $3 billion of shorts wiped out on Thursday, the largest single-day figure in records going back to 2021, bringing the two-day total to more than $4 billion. The largest individual position closed in the latest session was a $25.13 million bitcoin trade on Hyperliquid.
A liquidation happens when a trader borrows to make a bigger bet than their money would cover, the market moves against them, and the exchange closes the position automatically before the losses exceed what they put down. These were traders betting the price would fall, and each forced closure pushed prices up and created a cascade of liquidations.
The size of the number matters because it separates a rally built on demand from one built on mechanics. Traders forced to buy are not deciding bitcoin is worth more; they are covering a losing bet.
Meanwhile, Hyperliquid's HYPE rose over 4% to nearly $73 and leads the majors on the week at almost 27%. Ether added almost 5% to $2,350 and is up 24.5% over seven days. Dogecoin gained almost 9% to just over 8 cents and solana over 5% to just under $90, both up 17% on the week.
BNB rose 6% to $660 and is up 8% over seven days. Tron lagged, up 1.5% to just under 34 cents and barely moved on the week.
