8,000 Jobs'—Polymarket Sees Tech Layoff Surge As Meta AI Push Bites



"We're starting to see projects that used to require big teams now be accomplished by a single very talented person." That was Mark Zuckerberg, talking up the rise of artificial intelligence inside Meta this year. On Friday, Reuters reported the corollary: the Meta layoffs investors had been bracing for are coming, with roughly 8,000 jobs cut starting May 20, about 10% of its 79,000-person workforce.

Bettors on Polymarket, the prediction market backed by Wall Street's Intercontinental Exchange, saw it coming. The site's Meta headcount and Meta share-price markets, with about $112,000 in combined volume, were already pricing the cuts as both inevitable and good for the stock before Reuters published. The broader "Tech Layoffs Up or Down in 2026?" book has been at 77% Up all month and the Q1 companion has collapsed to 96% Up, essentially calling the quarter resolved before it formally settles on May 5.

How Many Tech Workers Polymarket Sees Losing Jobs

The Meta-specific markets tell the cleaner version of the story. A Polymarket book on "Meta headcount above ___ in Q1?" with about $46,000 in volume is essentially certain Meta finished the quarter above 75,000 employees (99%) and 76,000 (98%), but only gives 32% odds it stayed above 77,000 and 11% odds above 78,000. That implies an end-of-Q1 headcount near 76,500, down from the 79,000 figure Reuters used as the baseline. About 2,500 Meta jobs are already gone. The May 20 wave will take that to roughly 11,000 cuts on the year.

The market is pricing the cuts as good news for the stock. A separate "What price will Meta hit in April?" book with $66,000 in volume has Meta already clearing $700 (85% Yes), $730 priced at 42%, and a downside dip to $540 trading at just 5.75%. The combined volume on the Meta-specific markets is over

Here’s why Morpho price rallied 12% today

Morpho price rallied to nearly $2 for the first time this year as a wave of institutional interest and new protocol upgrades lifted demand for the token.

According to data from crypto.news, Morpho ($MORPHO) price climbed more than 12% to an intraday high of $1.94 on Friday before easing slightly to $1.93 at press time, marking its strongest level so far this year.

There are four key reasons behind the latest move.

First, Morpho’s integration with Fireblocks has unlocked a fresh stream of institutional capital. The company rolled out its Earn product on April 15, giving over 2,400 clients the ability to allocate idle stablecoins into Morpho vaults. Given that Fireblocks processes more than $200 billion in monthly stablecoin volume, the tie-up creates a meaningful channel for liquidity to flow into the protocol.

Second, Morpho has widened its offering with the launch of Morpho Midnight, a lending system built around fixed rates and fixed durations. The product is geared toward traditional finance players who rely on predictable returns, which could help Morpho gain traction as backend infrastructure for credit markets.

Third, the project is making steady progress in the real-world asset space. The onboarding of Unified Labs as a risk curator for tokenized asset vaults signals its push into Asian markets. It also builds on earlier efforts to support loans backed by non-traditional collateral such as tokenized commodities, strengthening its presence in the RWA segment.

Fourth, rising institutional backing has added further support to the rally. Apollo Global Management is in the process of acquiring up to 90 million $MORPHO tokens over a four-year period, which accounts for roughly 9% of the total supply.

At the time of writing, Bitcoin was trading around $75,024, as the sector analyzes how to protect Satoshi Nakamoto’s 1.1 million $BTC. The volume of options and the bias of long-term “puts” already reflect a demand for protection against extreme systemic events.

Typically, forks like the one in 2017 occurred in a retail market of $45 billion. However, with a current market cap of $1.5 trillion, such an event under the quantum risk in Bitcoin would have much more drastic consequences.

Lim argues that the problem is not just mathematical; it is deeply sociopolitical. The community must decide whether to burn old coins through governance or allow a state actor with quantum power to attempt to claim those inactive assets.

Crypto-linked stocks surged Friday, led by a sharp rally in beaten-down digital asset treasury firms, as progress toward ending the Iran war jolted risk assets, sending bitcoin to a two-month high of $78,000.

U.S. President Donald Trump said in a Truth Social post that Iran committed to keeping open the Strait of Hormuz, a key artery for global energy markets.

"Iran has just announced that the Strait… is fully open and ready for full passage," Trump said in a Truth Social post, adding that peace talks between the countries were progressing. Reports that the U.S. is considering unfreezing $20 billion in Iranian assets and Trump's remarks about acquiring Iran's enriched uranium further boosted sentiment.

As the headlines helped calm fears of a prolonged energy shock, crude oil tanked 13% to near $80 per barrel.

"The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is the risk-on signal the global markets have been waiting for," said Matt Mena, senior crypto research strategist at digital 21shares.

"By removing one of the most significant geopolitical chokepoints in the world, Iran has effectively uncorked a massive wave of liquidity and investor confidence," he added. "With oil nose diving below $85 for the first time in a month, inflation fears may finally come to an end."

Bitcoin climbed to $78,000, breaking out from a two-month range that capped prices since early February and up nearly 5% over the past 24 hours.
The move rippled across the broader cryptocurrency prices higher, with major altcoins ether (ETH), Solana (SOL) and $XRP ($XRP) posting 4%-5% gains.

Looking at crypto-related equities, the biggest winners were crypto treasury firms — companies that hold digital assets on their balance sheets — which had been heavily battered in recent months.

Bitcoin is surging today on a geopolitical trigger few predicted: Iran today announced the Strait of Hormuz (or Strait of Iran, as President Donald Trump now calls it) will remain fully open during the ongoing ceasefire. It sent oil prices tumbling and risk assets surging in tandem.

Bitcoin climbed above $78,000 intraday on the news before pulling back slightly, while digital asset treasury stocks like Strategy surged more than 10% as $BTC's rise pushed its holdings back out of the red.


The macro environment had been brutal for most of 2026 with Middle East tensions, inflation fears, a strong dollar, and tight liquidity keeping Bitcoin locked in a grinding descent from its October 2025 peak of $126,000.

Bulls are praying that changes this week.

Bitcoin: Breaking the pattern, but not out of danger

Today's candlestick on the Bitcoin charts is significant. Bitcoin opened at $75,172 and traders pushed the daily candle up to $77,205—a 2.7% gain on the session, with an intraday high of $78,384.

That move, modest as it sounds, was key to solidifying the thesis that the descending resistance trendline that had been rejecting Bitcoin at every rally attempt since October 2025 has been, finally, invalidated. For seven months, that line was gravity. This has been the first week Bitcoin trades over that line since the bearish pattern began.
