Elon Musk's ambitious semiconductor venture, Terafab, is moving closer to reality after his team began reaching out to some of the world's leading chipmaking equipment suppliers. According to Bloomberg, staff representing the joint venture between Tesla and SpaceX have contacted industry heavyweights Applied Materials, Tokyo Electron, and Lam Research to request price quotes and delivery timelines for critical manufacturing equipment. Musk first unveiled the Terafab initiative in March, positioning it as a bold step toward making Tesla, SpaceX, and his Al company xAl entirely independent in chip production. The facility is designed to handle every stage of semiconductor manufacturing in-house, spanning chip design, fabrication, lithography, masking, and packaging a vertically integrated model rarely attempted at this scale. Perhaps the most striking claim tied to the project is its production target: one terawatt of computing power annually. That figure would dwarf the current combined output of most chipmakers operating globally today, signaling just how transformative Musk envisions the facility to be. The project gained further credibility last week when Intel announced it would be joining the venture, adding established semiconductor expertise to what is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched manufacturing plays in the Al industry. At its core, Terafab is built to fuel Musk's interconnected ambitions across artificial intelligence, robotics, and autonomous driving areas that demand enormous and ever-growing supplies of cutting-edge processing power. WASHINGTON -- Cryptocurrency markets surged and oil traders recalibrated after signals that the Strait of Hormuz is reopening, even as military tensions and policy contradictions persist.

While equities have been slower to react, analysts say the divergence reflects how different parts of the global financial system process risk and liquidity.

In an interview with RFE/RL on April 17, Ryan Kirkley, CEO of blockchain payments company Global Settlement Network, explains the worldwide economic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, why markets are moving at varying paces, and why oil prices may already be turning.

RFE/RL: Let's start simple. Why is the Strait of Hormuz so critical to the global market?

Ryan Kirkley: We see roughly 20 percent of all oil and nearly 30 percent of petroleum products flow through the Strait of Hormuz. Even a small disruption breaks global supply chains, from pharmaceuticals to agriculture to jet fuel to the energy that powers grids around the world.

The moment that flow is interrupted, we begin to see countries falter, economies weaken, and entire industries come under rapid stress. Realistically, the Strait of Hormuz touches nearly every part of the global economy.

RFE/RL: One industry that responded quickly to the latest developments is crypto. Why is Bitcoin suddenly part of this conversation?

Kirkley: Bitcoin was always part of this conversation with Iran. What many people don't realize is that Iran accounts for a significant share of global Bitcoin mining.

She added that there have also been systemic failures to address child sexual abuse material, data privacy violations, and widespread fraud by verified users. Meanwhile, the senator warned about Musk’s potential role in shaping the regulatory environment for his own financial product, as X Money may include stablecoin issuance. At BUIDL Asia 2026, Ethereum Foundation researcher Luca Zanolini confirmed a roadmap target to reduce transaction finality to under one minute. Meanwhile, the long-to-short ratio sits at 1.54, a quiet signal that smart money is accumulating while retail hesitates.

Zanolini’s remarks, delivered April 17 at the Sofitel Ambassador Seoul, cut to the heart of Ethereum’s design philosophy.

“Ethereum was designed to keep producing blocks even if participation drops,” he said. “The next challenge is to preserve that feature while reducing transaction finality to less than one minute.”

In 2023, Ethereum kept producing blocks uninterrupted even after client errors knocked more than half of all validators offline. The finality improvement carries a 2029–2030 implementation target, and the fundamental thesis is getting reinforced.

Ethereum Price Prediction: $2,420 the Target

ETH has traded in a tight bullish range between $2,285 and $2,360 over the past 24 hours, with 24-hour trading volume exceeding $18 billion. This figure reflects active participation at these levels, without liquidity drifting lower. The funding rate is essentially neutral at 0.0001%, suggesting no extreme leverage in either direction.

The critical support zone is $2,250. As long as ETH holds above that floor, the technical structure favors a push toward $2,420 resistance. A clean break above $2,420 opens the path to $2,870, a level that would approach territory last seen before the drawdown from ETH’s all-time high of $4,950. T

According to the blog post, the Ethereum Foundation teamed up with Secureum, The Red Guild, and Security Alliance (SEAL) in late 2024 to roll out said program. The initiative offered stipends to people carrying out public‐goods security work across the Ethereum ecosystem.
