Bitcoin (BTC) Price: Surge to $78K Reversed After Iran Closes Strait of Hormuz Again
Bitcoin surged to $78,000 after Iran briefly reopened the Strait of Hormuz, then fell back to $76,000 when the strait closed again within 24 hours.

The rally triggered $762 million in crypto liquidations, with $593 million wiping out short positions.

Spot Bitcoin ETFs pulled in nearly $1 billion in weekly inflows — their best week since January.

Morgan Stanley launched a Bitcoin Trust fund, which already holds $120 million in assets after just six trading days.

Ether, XRP, BNB, and Solana all posted weekly gains despite the weekend pullback.

Bitcoin had a wild week driven by geopolitical headlines out of the Middle East. The price swung sharply in both directions as news around the Strait of Hormuz changed fast.

On Friday, Iran’s foreign minister announced the Strait of Hormuz was reopened to commercial shipping for the duration of a ceasefire. U.S. President Donald Trump backed the claim, saying Iran had agreed to an “unlimited” suspension of its nuclear program.

Bitcoin jumped above $78,000 on the news. Oil markets moved the other way, with Brent crude falling nearly 10% to around $85 per barrel.

The breakout triggered one of the biggest short squeezes of 2026. Data from CoinGlass shows $762 million in total liquidations across 168,336 traders. Short positions made up $593 million of that, with bitcoin shorts alone accounting for $381 million.

Funding rates on bitcoin perpetuals had been negative for weeks, meaning shorts were paying a premium to hold their positions. The Hormuz headline was the spark that flipped that setup.

XRP Price Eyes Breakout as ETF Inflows Hit 2026 High
The $XRP price is gaining significant traction amid rising ETF inflows, which push the altcoin toward a potential breakout. Despite a short-term loss, the Ripple token has seen more than 7% uptick in a week, outperforming several top cryptocurrencies.

Notably, this price spike is driven by a steady increase in institutional adoption. As the $XRP ETF weekly inflows have hit the highest level in 2026, momentum is building around the asset. This strengthens the bullish case.

$XRP has now emerged as a major player, becoming one of the most talked-about cryptocurrencies. This is mainly due to its positive sentiment and growing institutional exposure.

As of press time, the $XRP price$XRP-2.65% is trading at $1.43, with a slight decline of 2.7% in a day and 1.5% in a month. However, the token has surged by about 7.5% in a week. This indicates that despite the current slowdown, the overall sentiment remains positive.

Adding more intrigue to this setup, analyst ChartNerd shared an X post about the historical movements of the $XRP price. According to his post, $XRP has been moving along a steady upward trendline. This trendline has held strong through multiple market cycles. Each time the price has pulled back to this level, it has found support and bounced back. This has often led to significant $XRP price rallies.

The analyst stated that this pattern has repeated multiple times over the past six years. Thus, it has become a key structure that traders closely watch. Now, in early 2026, $XRP is once again approaching this same trendline. Thus, it raises expectations of another potential move higher.

According to ChartNerd, the Ripple token’s current setup looks similar to past cycles, including the pattern seen before its 2017 breakout.
