South Korean Crypto Trading Plummets 28%

South Korea, a nation long revered by the digital asset industry as the "El Dorado of liquidity," is seeing a change in investment trends.

The country's famously tech-savvy and highly active retail traders are pivoting their capital away from digital assets and pouring it into the domestic stock market.

They are being lured by the explosive, momentum-driven returns of the artificial intelligence and semiconductor sectors.

South Korea has historically been a major hub and a boon for cryptocurrency trading due a highly enthusiastic population of retail investors, technological infrastructure as well as appetite for volatility.

Many cryptocurrency projects have historically referred to South Korea as the "El Dorado of liquidity".

A massive decline in trading volumes

According to TRM Labs, a global blockchain intelligence firm, South Korea still maintained its position as the second-largest market for retail crypto activity in the first quarter of 2026. It trailed only the United States, which posted $212 billion.

However, beneath that high ranking lies a severe contraction. South Korea’s cryptocurrency trading volume plummeted 28% compared to the previous year. This is the sharpest decline among all major global markets, falling significantly harder than the global average drop of 20%.

Crypto India Outlook: INR Stablecoin Makes the Rupee Go Global – GetBit Founder Makes a Bold Prediction

India is likely to move toward a more balanced cryptocurrency regulatory framework in the coming years, according to GetBit Founder Abhay Agarwal, who believes the current tax structure was introduced during a period when policymakers were still trying to understand a rapidly evolving industry.

Speaking in an interview with Coinpedia, Abhay said the existing 30% tax on crypto gains remains high compared to most other asset classes, but emphasized that the larger challenge is the 1% Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) imposed on every crypto transaction.

According to Abhay, the current framework served its purpose by helping regulators monitor the sector. However, as regulatory visibility improves and the industry matures, he expects policymakers to revisit the tax structure. He believes a reduction in TDS is likely to be the first major change, potentially within the next two to four years.

The Bitcoin CVDD model that has historically nailed the bottom now indicates that the premier crypto asset has a local base at $48,000.

Bitcoin ($BTC) dropped under $60,000 on June 5, breaking below its February low of $60,130. While its price has recovered to $65,000, the decline may have done more than shake market confidence.

According to the analyst, selling pressure on crypto assets other than Bitcoin ($BTC) and Ethereum ($ETH) on spot exchanges has reached its most extreme levels in the last five years. Data shows that the trend of investors exiting altcoins has been ongoing for a long time, and risk appetite in the market has weakened significantly.

The analysis indicated that altcoins have faced net selling pressure in spot markets for 15 consecutive months. During this period, selling volumes consistently outpaced buying volumes, creating a persistent imbalance in the market. According to CryptoQuant data, the difference between the total trading volume of altcoins, excluding $BTC and $ETH, has fallen to its lowest negative level since data collection began in 2020.

Analyst IT Tech emphasized that this indicator is critical for understanding investor behavior. According to them, a large portion of investors trading in the altcoin market have been net sellers for a long time. This could indicate a shift of capital towards Bitcoin, which is perceived as safer, or traditional financial instruments.

Although data showed that the difference between buying and selling volumes in altcoins was almost balanced in early 2025, this improvement was not permanent. In the following months, the indicator turned sharply negative again and continued its downward trend. Thus, selling pressure in the altcoin market accelerated again.
