Is Crypto Still an Independent Asset? New Research Sheds Light

A new academic study published on SSRN explores whether cryptocurrencies are still independent alternative assets or have they become increasingly integrated with traditional financial markets. The research looks at how big cryptos, gold, oil, stocks, and the dollar interact, especially in terms of how market shocks and volatility move from one asset group to another.

Since 2024, more institutions have entered crypto than ever via ETFs, corporate treasury strategies, tokenization projects, and traditional banks. As a result, many now think cryptocurrencies are no longer operating in isolation. SSRN researchers say that different asset classes become more linked during market turmoil, so big economic events can now move crypto just like they move stocks, oil, gold, and currencies.

Crypto Is No Longer Living in Its Own World

One of the main takeaways from the study is that cryptocurrencies appear to be behaving less like isolated speculative assets and more like part of the wider global financial system.

During the last few months of the Middle Eastern conflict and oil prices surging, Bitcoin (and many others) fell sharply despite no major crypto‑specific negative catalyst. Most blamed the drop on a general risk‑off mood in global markets, rather than anything happening within the Bitcoin ecosystem itself.

On top of that, with the announcement of a peace deal between the US and Iran, the whole crypto market experienced gains. All of the top cryptocurrencies saw a price increase. For instance, Ethereum, Solana, Cardano, and XRP had a roughly 10% increase in the last 24 hours, while some like Zcash saw an even bigger boost, over 25%.

Crypto Is Mostly Independent

Chamath Palihapitiya Says Bitcoin Could Reach $1.14 Million as Halving Cycle Repeats

Billionaire investor Chamath Palihapitiya says Bitcoin’s historical halving cycles continue to point toward significant long-term upside. While discussing Bitcoin’s past performance, he argued that each halving has been followed by a period of consolidation before a powerful expansion phase takes over.

According to Chamath, the current cycle is following a pattern that investors have seen before, with Bitcoin still moving through the post-halving phase that has historically preceded major rallies.

Bitcoin’s Halving Pattern Remains Intact

Chamath explained that Bitcoin investors often spend the first few months after a halving trying to understand the market’s new supply dynamics.

However, the biggest gains have typically come later.

“Within six months to a year and 18 months of these things, there are these crazy price appreciation cycles that happen.” He said.

Looking at previous cycles, Bitcoin gained roughly 45x after the first halving, nearly 28x after the second, and around 8x after the third over 18 months.

While returns have gradually decreased as Bitcoin has matured, the gains remain substantial compared to most traditional assets.

ETFs Add a New Variable

Chamath also pointed to a major difference in this cycle: spot Bitcoin ETFs.

“The other thing that’s happened is we’ve commercialized Bitcoin,” he said.

In his view, ETFs have opened the door for a much larger group of investors to gain exposure to Bitcoin through traditional financial markets. That additional demand did not exist during previous halving cycles.

As a result, Bitcoin now has both the historical tailwind of reduced supply and a growing institutional demand channel.

The Math Behind the $1.14 Million Figure

Chamath applied the average returns from Bitcoin’s second and third halving cycles to the current market structure.

Wall Street is building income products around it anyway, and two events landing within days of each other show how far that shift has progressed.

BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Premium Income ETF (BITA) is set to begin trading on Nasdaq on June 16, while in Japan, Metaplanet signed a share-transfer agreement on June 12 to acquire all outstanding shares of Siiibo Securities.

The common thread is engineered yield, income manufactured from options premiums, credit structures, and collateralized exposure layered on top of an asset whose protocol pays nothing to holders.

Metaplanet held 40,177 $BTC as of June 15, with a net asset value of ¥457.6 billion, making it the third-largest corporate Bitcoin holder globally and the largest in Japan.

The Siiibo acquisition costs ¥2.1 billion and is funded primarily through cash and borrowings, with Metaplanet noting it may also draw on Bitcoin-backed credit facilities offering up to $500 million in borrowing capacity.

The deal closes on July 13, with full subsidiary conversion expected by late August, followed by a rename to Metaplanet Securities. Siiibo holds a registered Type I Financial Instruments Business Operator license and operates a private placement corporate bond platform that has supported over 100 bond issues for over 40 companies.

Metaplanet's supplemental materials, framed around generating yield for Japan, state that the group will be able to offer income-oriented products, including $BTC-linked bonds, once Siiibo becomes a subsidiary, though the company notes these are still plans.

UBS Stated That the Iran-U.S. Agreement Has Eased Pressure on the Fed to Raise Interest RatesLeslie Falconio, Head of Taxable Fixed Income Strategy at UBS Global Wealth Management, said that the drop in oil prices following the agreement announced between the US and Iran has reduced the pressure on the Fed to raise interest rates this year.

According to Falconio, the decline in oil prices has led to a strengthening in the US Treasury bond market. This development has also caused expectations of a December interest rate hike, which the markets had almost fully priced in beforehand, to gradually recede.

Falconio noted that even before the ceasefire agreement, oil prices had begun to fall, yet the yield on two-year US Treasury bonds had risen. He explained that this was because markets had priced in a nearly 100% probability of a rate hike in December. Falconio stated, “Now oil prices are falling, and the market is withdrawing its expectations of a rate hike. Therefore, the yield on two-year Treasury bonds is also starting to fall.”
