Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed the strait's reopening on social media, tying it to a 10-day ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon. President Donald Trump echoed the announcement but clarified that the U.S. naval blockade on Iranian ports would remain in place.Currency strategists linked the dollar's pullback directly to easing geopolitical tensions. "As risk retreats from the Middle East, the safety move into the U.S. dollar is being reversed," said Dennis Kissler, Senior Vice President at BOK Financial. The dollar had previously benefited from investor confidence that the U.S., as a major energy exporter, was more insulated than other economies from oil supply disruptions caused by the strait's effective closure.Peace negotiations between Washington and Tehran are progressing, with talks reportedly centered on the release of $20 billion in frozen Iranian assets in exchange for Iran surrendering its enriched uranium stockpile. Trump later stated that Iran agreed to suspend its nuclear program indefinitely without receiving frozen funds.In broader currency markets, the euro edged 0.1% lower against the dollar to $1.1766, while the British pound held steady at $1.3521. According to the blog post, the Ethereum Foundation teamed up with Secureum, The Red Guild, and Security Alliance (SEAL) in late 2024 to roll out said program. The initiative offered stipends to people carrying out public‐goods security work across the Ethereum ecosystem.

Crypto markets are having a strong Tuesday. Bitcoin jumped nearly $4,000 in 12 hours, hitting $74,461. Ethereum surged 7.85% to $2,366 and XRP climbed 3.11% to $1.36. The total crypto market cap crossed $2.52 trillion, adding over $100 billion in a single day.

The move was fast and largely mechanical. Here is what actually drove it.

The Short Squeeze That Started Everything

Reports of potential progress toward a US-Iran deal acted as a catalyst across risk assets. Traders who had been betting against the market were caught badly positioned and forced to close their short positions in a hurry.

The result was a cascade of $425 million in short liquidations, part of a total $530 million wiped from leveraged positions on the day. When shorts get forced out at scale, they buy to close their positions, which adds buying pressure on top of buying pressure. That mechanical dynamic is why the move looked so sudden and aggressive.

Over $300 million in crypto shorts were liquidated in the 12-hour window around Bitcoin’s spike to $74,500.

Bitcoin investors are suddenly confronting an uncomfortable math problem inside the $91.7 billion U.S. spot bitcoin ETF market.

"Coinbase Custody holds 84% of all US spot Bitcoin ETF assets," Marc Baumann, founder of research firm fiftyonexyz, posted on X on April 14. "That's $77 billion with a single custodian. For an industry built on decentralization, the most important product category has a single point of failure. Regulators will notice."

The warning is landing as bitcoin trades near $77,000, having clawed back from a 40% drawdown since its late-2025 peak around $126,000. It also lands three weeks after the April 2 conditional approval of a national trust charter for Coinbase by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. "OCC grants Coinbase conditional approval for a National Trust Bank Charter," Swiss law firm Goldblum & Partners posted on X on April 13, noting that "11 crypto firms now in the federal banking pipeline" and that a new rule, 12 CFR 5.20, "explicitly permits non-fiduciary crypto custody for national trust banks." That regulatory blessing, in a twist, deepens the concentration analysts are now calling out.

The figure itself has become the new rallying cry of bitcoin's structural skeptics. CryptoSlate first framed the dollar number on April 12 as "over 80% of Bitcoin ETF assets hit Coinbase custody choke point with $74B at risk." Within 48 hours, the phrasing was circulating through crypto-media accounts and analyst threads.

"Over 80% of Bitcoin ETF assets now sit inside Coinbase custody. That’s roughly $74B concentrated in one infrastructure layer," wrote crypto-media account W3BCMedia on April 13. Institutional adoption was growing, the account added, "but so is systemic custody risk."
