According to Bitstamp data, the cryptocurrency not only tapped the threshold but went on to reach an intraday high of $78,348.

Although it retreated to just under that level immediately after, bitcoin’s jump brought its 24-hour gains to 4.1% and lifted its market capitalization to nearly $1.56 trillion.
