This was the total value of Stargate's computing power empire that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman presented to investors at the end of 2025. Fourteen months later, that figure was slashed to $600 billion. According to a March 16 report by The Information, OpenAI has significantly restructured its Stargate computing infrastructure project, abandoning its plans to build its own data centers and shifting entirely to leasing computing power from cloud service providers such as Microsoft Azure, Oracle, and Amazon AWS. Stargate has been split into three functional teams, all managed by former Intel Chief Technology and AI Officer Sachin Katti. The immediate reason for this shift is not complicated. In January 2025, Stargate made a high-profile announcement at the White House, declaring a joint venture with SoftBank and Oracle to build a large data center, with an initial investment of $100 billion and a total investment of $500 billion over four years. However, more than a year after the project's launch, not a single employee has been hired, and not a single data center has been substantially developed. According to CNBC, lenders are unwilling to provide billions of dollars in construction financing to a company that still suffers huge operating losses. Earlier this month, OpenAI also withdrew from expansion negotiations at Oracle's Stargate in Abilene, Texas. For over a year, with zero employees and zero construction started, Stargate's "self-built" path never truly began. According to breakdown data from investor materials, Altman's total commitment of $1.4 trillion is distributed among seven vendors. According to venture capital analyst Tomasz Tunguz's analysis of investor materials, Broadcom accounts for $350 billion, Oracle $300 billion, Microsoft $250 billion, NVIDIA $100 billion, AMD $90 billion, and AWS
