Charles Schwab is preparing to offer clients direct access to cryptocurrencies, joining a growing group of traditional financial institutions that have moved into digital-asset services.

The firm plans to roll out “Schwab Crypto” through its Premier Bank platform, enabling eligible customers to buy and sell Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) directly, according to disclosures on the company’s website.

Charles Schwab’s New Crypto Service
Charles Schwab’s announcement makes clear that the new offering will not be open to everyone. The firm says not all applicants will qualify, and accounts will be available in every US state except New York and Louisiana.

Company leadership has signaled a cautious, phased approach to the launch. CEO Rick Wurster told investors last month that Schwab will initially support only Bitcoin and Ethereum and is “extremely confident” in the technical work required to integrate crypto trading into its systems.

Charles Schwab’s CEO also described a staged rollout: the exchange will first test the platform internally with employees, then open access to a limited group of customers, and only after that offer the service broadly to its investor base.

Launch Date And Fees Still Unknown
Until now, Charles Schwab investors seeking crypto exposure have had to rely on alternative products available through the broker. The firm already provides access to crypto exchange-traded products (ETPs), crypto-related equities, Bitcoin futures, and listed options tied to spot Bitcoin ETPs.

Schwab Crypto would, if launched as described, mark a move into direct custody-and-trading services for the two largest digital assets. A few details remain unsettled. Schwab has not yet disclosed the exact launch date or the final fee structure for Schwab Crypto.

Stablecoins Surpass ACH Volume for the First Time

The ACH functions as the backbone of the U.S. payments infrastructure and handles approximately 93% of salary payments in the country, according to Nacha.
Stablecoin transaction volume overtook the U.S. Automated Clearing House network in February, marking a first for the asset class since its emergence less than 12 years ago. Data from blockchain analytics platform Artemis shows that 30-day adjusted rolling stablecoin volume reached $7.2 trillion that month, compared to $6.8 trillion processed by the ACH.

The Artemis figures exclude MEV activity and intra-centralized exchange transactions, comparing adjusted stablecoin volume to daily average volumes across other major financial systems. The ACH functions as the backbone of the U.S. payments infrastructure and handles approximately 93% of salary payments in the country, according to Nacha.

March data from Artemis shows stablecoin volume continued to climb, reaching $7.5 trillion for the month and matching the ACH over the same 30-day window. The figures extend a multi-year trend of stablecoin volume growth relative to networks such as Visa and PayPal.

"Stablecoins are quietly becoming the foundational infrastructure for global payments: no banks, no weekends, no borders," analyst Alex Obchakevich wrote in an X post on Friday.

Total stablecoin supply reached $315 billion in Q1 2026, increasing by $8 billion from Q1 2025, according to CEX.IO data. Stablecoins also accounted for 75% of total crypto trading volume in the quarter, the highest share on record.

Analysts at Standard Chartered have forecasted the total stablecoin market cap reaching $2 trillion by 2028, an increase of more than 530% from current levels.

Token Surge Followed The Hoax
The scam began with a post from an account pretending to be veterinarian Joe Hollins, the real doctor who has cared for Jonathan on Saint Helena, a British territory in the South Atlantic.

The fake post (below) claimed the tortoise had died and pushed users toward a Solana memecoin tied to the story. Some news outlets initially amplified the false death claim before it was debunked.

Both the Governor of Saint Helena, Nigel Phillips, and the real Joe Hollins subsequently confirmed that Jonathan was still alive.

The setup was simple and fast. A trusted identity was copied, a sad story was posted, and crypto was added to the mix before many users had time to check the facts.

A crypto news site reported that the false account was used to promote donations and token buying, turning a strange animal story into a short-lived trading frenzy.

This observation suggests that these investment funds now play a major role in price discovery, which has been historically tied to trading volume observed on the centralized exchanges. Meanwhile, the net assets of 1.3 million BTC represent more than just inflows. XWIN Research Japan describes this development as a structural supply lock, reducing BTC liquidity in active circulation.
